Liverpool’s new center-back, Jeremy Jacquet, is reported to have sustained a severe shoulder injury just days after confirming his move to Anfield.
During Rennes’ 1-3 defeat to Lens, Jeremy Jacquet appeared to suffer a serious shoulder injury. He landed awkwardly and cried out in pain upon hitting the ground. The 20-year-old defender had to be assisted off the pitch by a Rennes coaching staff member, raising concerns that the injury could be serious.
After the match, Rennes head coach Habib Beye stated: “With Jeremy, it’s a shoulder issue. We still have time to run further tests, but it definitely looks quite serious.”
This is unfortunate news for fans of both Rennes and Liverpool. During the recent winter transfer window, Liverpool finalized a £60 million deal for Jacquet. He was loaned back to Rennes and is set to join Anfield from the summer of 2026.
Jacquet has attracted a lot of attention due to his great potential. Before sealing the deal with Liverpool, he was a top target for Chelsea. However, after missing out on Marc Guehi (who moved to Man City), Liverpool returned to pursue Jacquet. The Kop’s quick negotiation and decisive offer helped them beat Chelsea in this transfer.
Former star Jamie Carragher believes Jacquet could replace Ibrahima Konate in the squad. He said: “Looking at Jeremy Jacquet’s style, it gives me the impression that Konate might not renew his contract.”
“I think Liverpool will sign a top center-back in the summer, someone I imagine will partner Van Dijk, and then Liverpool will have two very good young center-backs,” Carragher added. “They still need playing time, but one of them – Giovanni Leoni – will return from an ACL injury, so next season won’t be easy for him. Van Dijk will be coming off a World Cup and will be a year older.”
“So, if Konate doesn’t sign, Liverpool will buy a replacement, a high-class center-back ready to play immediately, and the other two (Leoni and Jacquet) will be backup options. I still think they will have plenty of matches to play,” the English defender predicted..
Jacquet is emerging as one of the most promising center-backs in French football. He has made 19 appearances for Rennes in Ligue 1 this season. According to Fotmob, Jacquet averages 1.45 tackles and 1.02 interceptions per game. He also records 4.9 clearances and has a 75.5% success rate in aerial duels.
“Of course, I’m very pleased. He is a huge talent, even beyond just ‘talent’, but we call it that because he is still young. Not only us are interested in him. This is a great compliment to those who worked hard to bring in this player, as we have signed such a major talent,” Coach Arne Slot said when Liverpool signed Jacquet.
