Manchester United's 2-0 win against Tottenham in the Premier League not only secured three points but also uncovered many intriguing stories behind the scenes at Old Trafford.
In the 38th minute, Man United took advantage of being a man up after Cristian Romero was sent off. Bruno Fernandes stood at the corner spot and unexpectedly signaled to his teammates. Kobbie Mainoo darted towards the near corner flag area, gently touching the ball with great finesse, creating a huge gap for Mbeumo arriving from the second line. Unmarked, the Cameroonian calmly placed a curling shot, beating Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario.
After the match, Bryan Mbeumo “revealed” the story behind this pivotal goal. The idea for the set-piece did not come from the official coaching staff but originated from Jonny Evans, the veteran Man United defender who is currently part of Michael Carrick’s interim coaching team.
“Jonny came to talk to me and the players involved. We simply tried to execute that move. The coach wanted the whole team to practice it during training. The first attempt failed, but this time it came at the most crucial moment,”Mbeumo shared.
Evans’ role during Manchester United’s transitional phase has become increasingly significant. Since Ruben Amorim was dismissed a month ago, the former Northern Ireland defender has worked closely with the players, especially on organization and set-piece situations. Mbeumo’s goal is seen as clear evidence of his positive influence.
Nevertheless, Mbeumo quickly dismissed rumors that Manchester United is undergoing a major tactical overhaul under Michael Carrick.
“We are building on what was done before. Things aren’t as bad as many think. The whole team always tries to support each other and maintain the highest fighting spirit. If one player is beaten, another covers. The most important thing is never to give up,”Mbeumo emphasized.
After opening the scoring, Bruno Fernandes further stamped his mark by scoring the second goal in the 81st minute to seal the 2-0 win. This also marked the 200th goal of the Portuguese midfielder in 314 appearances for Manchester United, a memorable milestone in the captain’s career.
This victory also holds historical significance as Manchester United defeated Tottenham for the first time since October 2022, after losing all four encounters last season. Ruben Amorim personally suffered three defeats, including the disappointing Europa League final, which led to Manchester United missing out on European competition for the first time since the 2014/15 season.
