Luis Díaz achieved a hat trick and secured two more penalty kicks while Bayern Munich bounced back to victory, restoring their six-point advantage atop the Bundesliga standings.
The championship Bundesliga this season was once almost guaranteed for Bayern, but failing to win in the last two rounds allowed Borussia Dortmund to apply pressure. Knowing that another poor result would mark their first three-game winless streak in the top German league under Vincent Kompany, Bayern started the match with strong determination.
Michael Olise quickly forced goalkeeper Oliver Baumann to make a spectacular save from a powerful shot, before the home team was rewarded for their continuous pressure in the first 20 minutes. Kevin Akpoguma was judged to have pulled down Diaz in the penalty area, resulting in both a red card and a penalty. From the spot, Harry Kane was flawless, shooting right to beat Baumann.
However, playing with one less player seemed only to motivate Hoffenheim further. The visitors performed impressively and deserved an equalizer. Ozan Kabak narrowly missed with a header, and Fisnik Asllani struck the crossbar, causing Bayern some concern.
Then Manuel Neuer surprisingly made a risky play, allowing Asllani to steal the ball and pass it to Andrej Kramarić, who easily scored into an open net. Yet, all that effort was quickly erased when Vladimír Coufal became the next player to pull down Diaz in the box. Kane stepped up again for the penalty and shot into the same spot, helping Bayern regain the lead.
It seemed the first half would end with a narrow lead, but Bayern managed to score again in stoppage time. Diaz cut inside and curled a precise right-footed shot, leaving Baumann no chance to save. In the second half, Asllani almost scored with a shot brilliantly saved by Neuer, but overall Bayern dominated the game. Olise delivered a perfect pass inside the six-yard box for Diaz to tap in his fourth goal for the home team.
Satisfied with the comfortable lead, Bayern played relaxed and fluid football in Hoffenheim’s half. Near the end of the match, Diaz unleashed a shot from the edge of the box that curled into the far corner, completing his first Bundesliga hat-trick with Bayern Munich. This victory helped Bayern maintain a safe distance from Dortmund after their opponent’s win over Wolfsburg on Saturday.
