The Daily Mail reports that Vietnam has started building the world's largest stadium in Hanoi, seating 135,000 people, almost twice the size of Old Trafford, drawing interest from UK media.
According to British media, especially the Daily Mail, Vietnam has officially commenced construction of the world's largest football stadium, boasting a seating capacity of up to 135,000. Located in Hanoi, this project is described as nearly twice the size of Old Trafford, the home ground of Manchester United, which currently holds about 74,000 seats.
The Daily Mail states that the Trống Đồng stadium project was approved by Hanoi authorities in December 2025 and serves as the centerpiece of the Olympic Sports City complex, an urban sports and residential area with an estimated investment of around £28 billion. Upon completion, it will be the largest football stadium on the planet, surpassing all existing venues worldwide.
Compared to famous European stadiums, the scale of Trống Đồng is considered superior. Besides being nearly double Old Trafford, this stadium also far exceeds Wembley with its 90,000-seat capacity, England’s iconic football venue, and Beijing’s Bird’s Nest stadium. The Daily Mail emphasizes that it is very rare for any country to invest in such a large-scale football stadium in today’s context.
According to the released design, Trống Đồng stadium is inspired by the Đông Sơn bronze drum a symbol of ancient Vietnamese civilization representing community spirit, strength, and longevity. British media see this as an effort to blend traditional cultural identity with modern architecture to create a landmark not only in sports but also in culture and history.
When operational, Trống Đồng will surpass North Korea’s Rungrado May Day Stadium, which holds about 114,000 seats, becoming the stadium with the largest capacity globally. This project is also said to be bigger than Morocco’s Hassan II Stadium, currently under construction for the 2030 World Cup, with a capacity of approximately 115,000.
The Daily Mail cites project sources saying the stadium will feature the world’s largest retractable roof, implement energy-saving solutions, and use environmentally friendly materials. Beyond football, Trống Đồng is planned to host large-scale sports, cultural, and political events.
According to the plan, Trống Đồng Stadium is expected to be completed by 2028. The entire Olympic Sports City complex, including four functional zones, transportation systems, new urban areas, and supporting sports facilities, will be finished by 2035. British media regard this project as a strategic step to elevate Vietnam's sports infrastructure and international standing.
