Vietnam draws notice as the sole Southeast Asian country to compete in both men's and women's football at ASIAD 2026, generating numerous responses from fans in the area.
Southeast Asian football is witnessing a significant milestone as Vietnam becomes the only representative from the region to appear in both men's and women's football events at ASIAD 2026. This news quickly sparked lively discussions among the local fan community, with many recognizing the increasingly solid position of Vietnamese football.
According to the format agreed upon by AFC and OCA, the men's football competition at ASIAD 2026 is limited to 16 teams that have qualified for the 2026 AFC U23 Championship finals. Under this criterion, only Vietnam and Thailand from Southeast Asia meet the requirements. Notably, the Vietnam U23 team impressed by securing third place at the tournament in Saudi Arabia, reinforcing their leading role in the region's youth football on the continental stage. Meanwhile, women's football follows a similar selection process, with the 12 teams qualifying for the 2026 Women's Asian Cup automatically earning spots at ASIAD. As a result, Vietnam and the Philippines are the only Southeast Asian teams participating in this category.
Vietnam’s presence on both fronts has caught the attention of many Southeast Asian fans. On forums, some commented that “Vietnam truly embodies the role of the regional leader, excelling not only in men’s football but also maintaining consistent performance in women’s football over the years.”
A Thai fan admitted: “Thailand still has work to do to compete comprehensively; seeing Vietnam field strong teams in both categories highlights the gap.”
Meanwhile, an Indonesian user commented: “This is the result of long-term investment; Vietnam is moving in the right direction more than the others.” Several Filipino fans also expressed respect, stating “Vietnam’s women’s football is truly admirable and serves as a model for the region.”
On the other hand, a Lao supporter said: “Vietnam is currently leading Southeast Asian football, and that is evident to everyone.”
These reactions show that the standing of Vietnamese football in Southeast Asia is not only proven by results but also acknowledged by rivals and fans across the region ahead of ASIAD 2026.
