Ignoring Carrick, MU is determined to appoint a coach who hasn't advanced past the Champions League group stage

Following his departure from Olympique Marseille, Roberto De Zerbi stands out as the top contender to take over as Manchester United's manager.

Michael Carrick has achieved many positive things for Manchester United since being assigned as interim head coach until the end of the season. Although Carrick is building a convincing "profile" to be appointed permanently, the Red Devils' management continues to seek the best possible option for the hot seat.

According to Fichajes, Roberto De Zerbi is the top priority for MU’s new head coach position after reaching an agreement to terminate his contract with Marseille. The Italian strategist recently ended his tenure at the French club by mutual consent.

After facing difficulties this season, both De Zerbi and Marseille agreed that it was the right time to part ways. Failure to qualify for the Champions League knockout stage, along with the reality that the team is almost out of the title race in France, were key factors leading to this decision.

De Zerbi took charge in the summer of 2024 and showed promising signs during his first season with Marseille. However, he couldn't replicate that promise this season. The heavy 0-5 defeat against archrivals PSG at Parc des Princes was considered the "last straw," bringing the future of the 46-year-old coach to an end.

Despite not meeting expectations in Ligue 1, De Zerbi is still highly regarded for his career achievements. He made a significant impact by elevating Brighton, and with his reputation in the Premier League, MU is among the clubs eager to bring him in as their leader.

After Ruben Amorim was dismissed, Carrick temporarily took charge. Nevertheless, MU is aiming for a coach capable of leading a major rebuild. De Zerbi is considered a suitable candidate due to his football philosophy, clear playing style, and bold trust in young players.

Sources reveal that De Zerbi is not merely a name on the list but is "leading the race" to take over the hot seat before the next season. In fact, most influential voices within the club reportedly support appointing the Italian strategist.

However, MU is not rushing to make a decision. According to The Times, Carrick’s chances are not completely over. If he can stabilize MU’s performance and secure a high Premier League finish by season’s end, the former English midfielder could earn the permanent role at Old Trafford.

Currently, MU sits 4th in the Premier League with a 5-match unbeaten streak, trailing 3rd place Aston Villa by 5 points.
