Vietnam U17 is set to compete against South Korea, Yemen, and UAE in the group phase of the AFC U17 Championship, which quickly triggered intense discussions among Asian supporters.
On the afternoon of February 12, the group draw ceremony for the AFC U17 Championship was held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. This 2026 edition promises fierce competition as it directly affects qualification spots for the 2026 U17 World Cup.
Following FIFA's decision to expand the U17 World Cup to 48 teams, Asia was allocated 8 slots. With 16 teams competing in the AFC U17 finals, the top two from each group will earn World Cup berths, making the path more accessible than ever.
After the schedule was announced, Asian fans engaged in heated debates, with the most discussed match in Group C being Vietnam U17 versus South Korea U17.
Fans from Thailand voiced their support for Vietnam U17: “Vietnam should play confidently; South Korea is strong but not unbeatable. Just stay solid and counterattack fast.”
Meanwhile, Japanese supporters also issued a warning about Vietnam: “Don’t underestimate Vietnam; they are very tough in youth tournaments.”
South Korean fans, direct rivals of Vietnam U17 in the upcoming tournament, expressed caution: “Facing Vietnam again, please don’t disappoint us this time.”
Fans from the Philippines cheered for Vietnam as the flagbearer of Southeast Asian football: “Vietnam always gives their all; proud of our ASEAN brothers!”
Among the three opponents, South Korea is the most historically successful, having won the AFC U17 title twice. UAE and Yemen are also formidable, having reached the finals before. Vietnam’s best result remains fourth place (in 2000). These facts underline the significant challenge awaiting the Vietnamese squad in the upcoming campaign.
Vietnam U17 qualified for the finals as winners of Group C in the qualifiers, marking their 10th appearance at the AFC U17 Championship. Although Group C is considered tough, Vietnam’s chances remain alive. UAE and Yemen are rated close in level to Vietnam, meaning direct confrontations will be crucial for advancing.
Additionally, causing an upset against South Korea is not unrealistic if Vietnam U17 plays disciplined, tenacious football and capitalizes on key moments. The confidence gained from the U23 team’s victories will bolster the U17 players; South Korea is not an unbeatable opponent.
The 2026 AFC U17 Championship will take place from May 7 to 24 in Saudi Arabia. Vietnam U17 will start their campaign facing UAE U17 — a kickoff regarded as an important test for Vietnam’s youth World Cup ambitions.
