OFFICIAL: MU misses out on the dream strategist

Thomas Tuchel has renewed his contract to remain head coach of the England team until UEFA EURO 2028, the tournament scheduled to take place in the UK and Ireland.

The German tactician, who took charge of the team a year ago, will be in Brussels today to attend the UEFA Nations League draw and will coach England in the upcoming autumn matches, continuing all the way through to the EURO 2028 finals.

On the official website, The Football Association (FA) formally announced the new contract on February 12th. Tuchel is currently preparing for friendly matches next month against Uruguay and Japan. He is expected to comment on the new deal after the draw ceremony. The FA views Tuchel’s decision to stay as a “major boost,” since the former Chelsea manager could have taken a top-tier job elsewhere. Previously, he was considered for the Manchester United managerial position.

EURO 2028 will be hosted across England, Scotland, Wales, and Ireland. Initially, the FA and Tuchel planned to decide his future after the 2026 World Cup held in the USA, Mexico, and Canada.

Tuchel, who officially succeeded Gareth Southgate, signed his contract in October 2024 and began his role in January 2025. England have won all eight World Cup qualifying matches and are seen as one of the top contenders for the title.

Tuchel’s current contract expires after the World Cup, and the FA aims to remove any uncertainty about his future. This news comes as a shock to Manchester United, as Tuchel had emerged as a leading candidate for their permanent managerial role at Old Trafford next summer.

The “Red Devils” previously pursued the German coach after sacking Erik ten Hag in 2024, before Tuchel accepted the England job. Currently, Michael Carrick is interim manager and hopes to be appointed permanently. Additionally, Tuchel has been linked to the Real Madrid hot seat following Xabi Alonso’s dismissal.
