Hansi Flick acknowledged Barca’s weak performance versus Atletico but still believes in reversing the situation in the return match, affirming the squad’s ability to secure 2-0 victories each half at Nou Camp.
Following a heavy 0-4 loss to Atletico Madrid in the first leg of the Copa del Rey semi-final, coach Hansi Flick did not shy away from admitting Barcelona’s poor display, especially during the first 45 minutes. However, the German strategist maintained strong faith in the Catalan side’s ability to stage a comeback in the second leg.
Speaking after the match, Flick candidly stated: “We didn’t function as a unit in the first half. The team failed to press according to plan and lacked the intensity and hunger that Atletico showed. In high-level matches, you can’t start like that.” According to him, conceding early along with multiple defensive errors put Barca on the back foot and caused them to lose control of the game entirely.
Nevertheless, Flick noted an improvement from his players in the second half. Barca played more proactively, created several notable chances, and even put the ball in the net, but the goal was disallowed due to offside. “The second half showed that we still have fighting spirit. That’s what I want to see throughout the full 90 minutes,” he emphasized.
When asked if this was the worst day since he took charge of Barca, Flick shook his head and reaffirmed his unwavering belief. “I’m proud of the season the players are having. We will get back up and come back stronger.”
Looking ahead to the second leg at Nou Camp on March 4th, the German tactician sent a determined message: “We can turn this around. Barca is capable of winning 2-0 each half. We need the fans’ support at Nou Camp. When the whole team is united and cheered on by the crowd, anything is possible.” A four-goal deficit is a huge challenge, but for Flick, the door to the final remains open.
