MU is leading the race to re-sign the star they once released

Manchester United is said to be leading the competition to reunite with Scott McTominay, with the Scottish midfielder aiming to come back to the Premier League despite his achievements at Napoli.

Manchester United has emerged as the top contender to secure Scott McTominay’s signature, amid reports that the Scottish midfielder intends to return to the Premier League after a flourishing period with Napoli.

Joining Napoli in the summer of 2024 for a fee of £32 million, McTominay quickly became a key figure in the midfield of the Southern Italian club. In his first season, he played a major role in helping Napoli win the Serie A title, earning the Player of the Season award and a Ballon d'Or nomination.

Additionally, McTominay broke Denis Law’s 63-year-old record for the most goals scored by a Scottish player in a single Serie A season. His impressive form continues as he has already reached double-digit goals this season, despite his contract with Napoli running until 2028.

However, according to Tuttomercatoweb, McTominay and his girlfriend Cam Reading are considering a return to England in 2026. Although satisfied with life in Naples, the 29-year-old midfielder still “dreams” of making a Premier League comeback, with Manchester United currently “leading the race.”

Napoli’s representatives have also acknowledged the risk of losing him. Global development director Leonardo Giammarioli stated the club would struggle to retain the star if a substantial offer arrives and the player wishes to leave, especially as Italian clubs face financial constraints.

Nevertheless, the possibility of McTominay returning to Old Trafford remains controversial. Former defender Wes Brown believes the deal is unlikely due to a high transfer fee. However, he also confirmed that McTominay has significantly improved since leaving Manchester and is now being deployed correctly as an energetic box-to-box midfielder, rather than a deeper role as before.

On the other hand, Man Utd is seeking midfield reinforcements as Casemiro might leave on a free transfer, and Bruno Fernandes’s future remains uncertain. Names like Elliott Anderson and Adam Wharton have been linked, but if Napoli opens negotiations, McTominay could become a top priority target.
