Raheem Sterling has yet to train with Feyenoord, only 24 hours after signing with the Dutch club as a free agent.
Sterling recently agreed to a short-term deal with Feyenoord after mutually terminating his contract with Chelsea last month. At 31 years old, choosing Feyenoord—currently second in the league standings—also marks Sterling’s first time playing abroad, following his previous spells at Liverpool, Manchester City, Chelsea, and Arsenal.
However, according to regulations, Sterling can only train and play for coach Robin van Persie once his work permit has been approved. This is why he must temporarily stay out of upcoming joint training sessions.
The English player has not played any official matches this season after being placed on the "bomb squad" at Stamford Bridge. His lack of match fitness means Feyenoord fans might have to wait longer before seeing Sterling perform at his best on the pitch.
Nevertheless, Sterling has already received a new squad number at the club and appeared holding the Feyenoord jersey number 19. Dutch football expert Marcel van der Kraan believes this could be a fitting choice for the former England international at this stage.
“I think this is exactly what Raheem needs,”he told talkSPORT. “For the past three or four months, he has only been doing individual training and hasn't taken part in any matches. Robin understands that in the coming weeks he needs to gradually integrate him into team training. I don’t think he’s ready to play a full 90 minutes immediately.”
He added: “I believe Sterling will eventually make a difference for Van Persie’s team, especially in the battle to secure second place. But not this weekend. The work permit is extremely important now, since he comes from the UK and officially, he isn’t even allowed to train yet.”
“I’m about to head to training now, hoping to see him. But I doubt he’ll train with the full squad today because the permit is still pending.”
According to talkSPORT, close to 20 clubs contacted Sterling before he decided on Feyenoord. Everton was among those interested, but Sterling prioritized regular playing time, which he believes is more achievable at the Eredivisie club.
