Contrary to initial rumors, Vietnam U23 will not take part in the CFA Team China 2026 friendly tournament hosted by China.
The absence of Vietnam U23 from the March friendly tournament in China was officially confirmed after the organizers announced the list of participating teams. Previously, there were many reports suggesting that the Vietnamese youth football team was among the considered candidates.
According to the announcement from the Chinese Football Association, the CFA Team China U23 2026 will be held in Xi’an from March 25 to 31, featuring four teams: the host and three invited teams — Thailand U23, Iran U23, and North Korea U23. This event is seen as an important rehearsal for China’s youth team ahead of the continental sports festival at the end of the year, with high expectations for technical quality and competitiveness.
Notably, Vietnam U23’s name was frequently mentioned by local media in the early stages and was even considered almost certain at one point. However, in the end, not only Vietnam but also Uzbekistan are absent. This decision has caused some disappointment among domestic fans, as it was a valuable opportunity for young players to test themselves against strong continental opponents.
There are reports that the Vietnam Football Federation and coach Kim Sang Sik would have adjusted their FIFA Days plans if Vietnam U23 had participated in this tournament. Previously, Vietnam U23 was a regular guest at the CFA Team China tournaments over the past years.
In March, the Vietnam national team is expected to play a friendly match against Bangladesh before facing Malaysia in the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers. Meanwhile, Vietnam U23 will gather domestically and train through matches against V-League clubs. The squad mainly consists of U21 players, prepared with a long-term goal targeting the 2026 Asian Games.
On the host side, China U23 is still accelerating preparations. After finishing as continental runners-up, great expectations are placed on them in regional competitions. Some standout players might be promoted to the senior national team, but the coaching staff is also considering refreshing the squad, including the use of overage players. With thorough preparation and a packed schedule, the team clearly aims to make the most of this four-team tournament as a crucial test before the major campaign.
