Most top managers are distancing themselves from Manchester United, with Ancelotti poised to extend his contract with Brazil! Carrick’s chances of permanent appointment are rising again.

Thomas Tuchel’s name has been removed from Manchester United’s list of potential new managers, and Carlo Ancelotti is nearly off it as well. The 66-year-old Italian coach is about to renew his contract with the Brazilian national team for four years, preparing to lead them at the 2030 World Cup, effectively confirming he will not become the Red Devils’ future head coach.

According to "Jingji Net," Ancelotti began negotiations with the Brazilian Football Confederation last December about staying on after this summer’s World Cup. Although the new contract is not fully finalized, Ancelotti has agreed to this four-year long-term deal. He took charge of the "Samba Squad" in May 2025, marking his first time as a national team head coach. Previously, he served as an assistant to Sacchi during the 1994 World Cup.

Brazil is grouped with Morocco, Haiti, and Scotland in the North America World Cup, giving them a very high chance to advance to the knockout stages. Under Ancelotti’s leadership, Brazil will feature Manchester United players Casemiro and Cunha, which likely will be his only connection to the Red Devils.

Ancelotti has managed AC Milan and Real Madrid, winning Serie A, La Liga, and the Champions League, with six league titles and five European Cups to his name. He is considered one of the most ideal candidates for Manchester United’s next manager by many fans. Therefore, his decision to renew is another blow to the Red Devils, as like Tuchel, Ancelotti has also made it clear he is not interested in managing Manchester United.

Manchester United’s interest in these two top coaches is genuine. Italian transfer expert Fabrizio Romano revealed: “Manchester United is very interested in Tuchel; both the Glazers and the club’s management highly appreciate him. But his full attention has always been on the World Cup. Whether now or before the tournament, Tuchel will not agree to anything with Manchester United—there is simply no chance. He has the club’s recognition and high regard but no follow-up because Tuchel is completely focused on the World Cup and has now signed a new contract.”

Other well-known managers leading teams in the World Cup could theoretically be ideal choices for Manchester United, such as Germany’s Julian Nagelsmann or the USA’s Pochettino, who might leave after the tournament. However, those entering the market early are usually the unsuccessful coaches. Since the World Cup final is on July 19, successful managers will likely depart late, leaving little time for Manchester United.

If a national team coach agrees early to manage Manchester United, it would be seen as a lack of focus on World Cup preparations and cause a big controversy. Before the 2014 Brazil World Cup, Manchester United confirmed Van Gaal as their coach, and the Dutchman eventually led the team to fourth place, which gave no grounds for criticism.

Among Premier League managers, Oliver Glasner’s chances of being selected by Manchester United are now very slim. He uses a three-center-back system, and Crystal Palace’s performance has been dreadful, recently losing 2-3 to relegation-threatened Burnley. Ironically, Glasner remains the third favorite in betting odds for Manchester United’s next manager, which fully illustrates the club currently has no clear suitable candidate.

Roberto De Zerbi, recently dismissed by Marseille, is surprisingly the second favorite for Manchester United’s next head coach. He often stirs controversy with his words and actions at Marseille and is definitely not a low-profile manager. Moreover, Tottenham is also interested in hiring De Zerbi and might make an approach sooner.

Former England manager Southgate, who has long emphasized no intention to return to coaching, is still listed among potential Manchester United candidates, highlighting the limited options currently available. Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the Glazers team want to hire a top coach to boost Manchester United’s chances of winning the Premier League and achieve the grand plan of a title before the club’s 150th anniversary in 2028, but unfortunately, this may not materialize.

At present, Carrick indeed seems to have a real chance to secure the permanent position. Since taking charge, he has performed excellently with a record of 4 wins and 1 draw and was recently announced by the Premier League as the best manager for January. Other potential successors either have declining competitiveness or have distanced themselves voluntarily.

Recently, Manchester United owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe commented that Britain has become a colony for immigrants, which might cause more coaches to hesitate about managing the Red Devils. Currently, the Glazers have had to control the owner’s interviews and canceled a scheduled interview with Sky News UK. It is said that when Ratcliffe made these shocking remarks, Glazers staff tried to stop him, but the major shareholder insisted on continuing. Whether Ratcliffe’s views are correct is irrelevant because sometimes even the truth can be inappropriate. Rumors say if he does not apologize, Adidas may consider terminating its kit sponsorship with Manchester United.
