AFF Cup 2026 is expected not only to focus on success but also on team composition. Will Vietnam keep depending on seasoned players or decisively empower the upcoming talent?

Following the U23 Asian Championship in Saudi Arabia, Vietnamese football has produced a new golden generation with the potential to bring pride to the nation. The trend of rejuvenating the team is almost certain. Therefore, the upcoming AFF Cup 2026 may be the last major tournament for the veteran generation.
Ngọc Hải is a typical example. As a central defender, his experience and ability to organize the defense are invaluable assets. However, at 33 years old, the Đà Nẵng player is no longer at his peak. He has lost the agility and strength he had in his youth.
His acceptance of moves to lower-ranked V-League teams such as Đông Á Thanh Hóa and Đà Nẵng in the 2025/26 season also indicates that the player, who has represented Vietnam 80 times, has come to terms with this reality.
With the emergence of younger and more talented central defenders, Ngọc Hải’s chances of playing for the national team are diminishing. It would not be surprising if AFF Cup 2026 turns out to be his final tournament.
Goalkeeper is usually a position with older players, but the goalkeeper situation in Vietnamese football is different. Although Nguyễn Filip remains skilled, competition for the starting spot is extremely fierce.
The 33-year-old keeper himself can no longer maintain his top form. Mistakes are becoming more frequent, which seriously affects Filip’s chances. In the context of young goalkeepers like Trần Trung Kiên and Cao Văn Bình shining, Filip’s opportunities in the Vietnam team are even slimmer.
Hùng Dũng was once Vietnam’s number one midfielder. However, at 32, his stamina and physical condition are not what they used to be. The midfield now boasts many outstanding talents, especially the Vietnamese diaspora players returning home, making competition very intense.
Hùng Dũng still offers value through his control of tempo, calmness, and experience, but AFF Cup 2026 might be the tournament where he is seen more as an “experienced option” rather than the first choice throughout.
AFF Cup 2026 could be the last AFF Cup for Công Phượng. No one denies the talent of the striker from Nghệ An. However, his issue lies in his physical condition, as Công Phượng is currently struggling with numerous injuries.
With many younger stars emerging in Vietnam’s attacking line, it is understandable that Công Phượng might have to step back. At 31, this could be his last major tournament before retiring.
