Manchester United is considering a £20 million sale of Mount! Too many injuries and a £250,000 weekly wage are too high; after the coaching change, he has become a substitute.

A new ruler brings new ministers. Under Carrick’s management at Manchester United, 20-year-old academy midfielder Kobe Meno has emerged from the "icebox" to reclaim a starting role. However, Mason Mount, who was heavily relied upon by former coach Ruben Amorim, has not only been relegated to the bench but has also suffered another injury. The English midfielder wearing the Red Devils’ number 7 jersey is once again at a pivotal moment, with a dark road ahead. The Manchester Evening News reports that Mount’s future at Old Trafford looks grim.

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has returned to the number 10 position and is performing excellently, praised by Carrick as one of the best players currently in the Premier League. Up front, Cunha, Mbemo, and Amad Diallo hold steady starting roles, while Sheshko frequently comes off the bench trying to break into the starting eleven. Injured Patrick Dogu, before his absence, had switched to left winger and scored consecutively, drawing comparisons to Gareth Bale and Ruud Gullit.

This makes 27-year-old Mount’s situation even more awkward. He could have had a good start under the new coach, but his goal as a substitute against Manchester City was disallowed. Now, injuries have sidelined him for several matches. Carrick said he will return in the Everton game, but he can only expect a spot on the bench then.

Under Amorim, Mount’s style suited the 3-4-3 formation perfectly as a number 10. The young Portuguese coach praised him highly: "Mason Mount can defend and attack, performs excellently on the ball, and seeing him play well doesn’t surprise me. No matter the situation, Mason consistently does the same things: training, communicating, and getting along with those around Carrington. That’s not easy, so he’s a very outstanding player."

However, with Carrick now using a 4-2-3-1 system, he prefers traditional wide attacking roles in United’s frontline. For Mount, this might be similar to Meno’s role under Amorim. This doesn’t mean Mount lacks ability, but his style doesn’t fit the tactical needs. Moreover, the club probably won’t hire a coach who uses a three-defender system again.

Currently, Bruno Fernandes’ main competitor is no longer Meno, but the now recovered Mount. Regardless of the coach, Bruno remains the first choice and is a "iron man," starting and playing almost every match in full. This means Bruno’s substitutes are mostly spectators.

Once fully recovered, Mount might only be able to compete for positions on the left or right wings, positions he has played before but never secured as a consistent starter. On the left, there are Dogu and Cunha, while on the right are Amad Diallo and Mbemo, leaving Mount as a backup’s backup.

At his peak age, Mount is unlikely to secure regular playing time in the team. With Manchester United returning to the Champions League next season, increasing the number of matches, Mount could serve as a super-sub. However, his £250,000 weekly wage is clearly excessive for a substitute player. Coupled with seven injuries in over two years, if this continues, Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS will surely consider selling him.

Casemiro, earning £350,000 per week, is confirmed to leave; Rashford, on £325,000 weekly, might be bought by Barcelona; and Sancho, also on £250,000 per week, is set to be released when his contract expires this summer. The next player likely to be offloaded by Manchester United is Mount, who is already on track to be one of the most unsuccessful number 7s in the club’s history.

Mount’s contract still has two years remaining. Manchester United paid £60 million in transfer fees to sign him from Chelsea, with £55 million as a fixed amount. This means that selling Mount for just £20 million would not count as a loss under the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR).
