Matheus Cunha candidly declares he does not care about the “United Strand” haircut challenge, affirming that Man Utd’s priority is to earn 15 points instead of feeling pressured by side issues.
Manchester United forward Matheus Cunha straightforwardly says he “doesn’t care at all” about the viral haircut challenge from fan Frank Ilett, who is known by the nickname “The United Strand.”
Since October 2024, Frank Ilett vowed not to cut his hair until Man Utd wins 5 consecutive matches. The recent streak of 4 victories raised hope, but the 1-1 draw against West Ham United caused the challenge to remain “on hold.”
Speaking to RomarioTV, Cunha emphasized: “People seem more worried about 5 wins because of his hair than the 15 points. I choose the 15 points. I don’t care about his hair. Nobody wants to win 5 matches in a row more than us. But the pressure from that story somewhat overshadows the beauty of the season.”
The Brazilian star’s remarks reveal that Man Utd’s dressing room does not view this challenge as motivation. Previously, legend Wayne Rooney also suggested the side story unintentionally detracts from the players’ efforts. Meanwhile, the Man Utd women's team humorously reenacted the “haircut celebration” to tease the famous fan.
On the sporting side, Cunha has played a key role in the team’s revival under interim coach Michael Carrick. He scored in wins over Arsenal and Fulham, and assisted in the victory against Manchester City, becoming a bright spot in the attack.
After the draw with West Ham, Carrick admitted the team was disappointed not to complete a 5-game winning streak, but praised the fighting spirit as Benjamin Sesko scored a late equalizer to secure a point. He said this showed the squad’s resilience and desire to improve.
This draw means the “United Strand” challenge must start over. Man Utd will face Everton, Crystal Palace, Newcastle, Aston Villa, and Bournemouth in the Premier League. If they win all, the happiest person besides the players might be… the fan with the hair waiting to be cut.
