Manchester United academy midfielder Toby Collyer was once highly regarded by former head coach Erik ten Hag, even ahead of Casemiro in the pecking order. However, the 22-year-old English midfielder is now caught in a streak of bad luck, suffering two serious injuries during two separate loan spells this season.

Last summer, Collyer was loaned to Championship side West Bromwich Albion, but due to form and injuries, he only appeared in 12 league matches, mainly as a substitute, with just 3 starts and a total playing time of 253 minutes. A severe calf injury in November led to his early return to Manchester United in January.
After two months of treatment and recovery, Manchester United loaned Collyer out again, this time to Hull City, who are aiming for promotion to the Premier League, hoping to help him regain his form. On February 7th, Collyer made his debut for Hull City against Bristol City, coming on as a substitute and playing 14 minutes.
Hull City’s manager, Sergej Jakirović, has high hopes for him: "Our midfield has been underperforming, so we need solutions. Collyer is definitely someone to consider; he plays between the number 6 and 8 roles, full of energy, covering 12 kilometers per game, so I believe he can significantly improve that position."
Last weekend, Collyer was set to feature in the FA Cup against Premier League giants Chelsea, but he got injured during Wednesday’s training. According to the Manchester Evening News, he suffered a hamstring injury and will miss three weeks of matches. British media have remarked that Collyer's injury woes continue unabated.
After the match, Hull City’s coach Jakirović confirmed that Collyer will be sidelined for two to three weeks due to injury, meaning he is unlikely to return until March. This implies missing three Championship games, with Hull currently sitting 5th in the table, just 5 points shy of automatic promotion spots.

In 2024, under former coach Ten Hag, Collyer made his senior debut for Manchester United in the Community Shield against Manchester City. Following that, he featured in 12 more matches for the team.
Collyer’s contract with Manchester United runs until 2027, but given the current circumstances, the club is unlikely to renew it, and he may need to explore other options.
Playing as a defensive midfielder, Collyer is known for his excellent stamina, but injuries to his Achilles tendon and calf could hinder his future progress. According to Transfermarkt, his current market value is only around 5 million euros.
Interestingly, when Collyer joined Hull City, it was expected he would team up with former Manchester United academy left-back Brandon Williams. However, Williams soon agreed to terminate his contract early and was released after only five months at the club.
Williams was once hailed as the "new Elvin" at Manchester United but lost his way after gaining fame, involved in off-field controversies, including a 14-month prison sentence for dangerous driving, eventually leaving Old Trafford quietly. After being unemployed for 20 months, he earned a one-year short-term deal with Hull City following a successful trial, with an option for an additional year. Unfortunately, his performances were poor, featuring only once as a first-team substitute, and he has now lost his job again.

At 25, Williams might be saying goodbye to professional football, as few clubs are likely to take a chance on a player who failed to impress at Hull City. His career trajectory should serve as a cautionary tale for Manchester United academy players like Collyer to learn from and avoid.
