Barcelona was defeated 1-2 while playing away at Girona in the 24th round of the 2025/26 La Liga campaign.
Barcelona lost their advantage during the away game at Montilivi stadium as Girona staged a dramatic comeback to win 2-1. This result caused Blaugrana to miss the chance to reclaim the top spot in La Liga and forced them to continue chasing Real Madrid in the title race.
From the early minutes, the Catalan side showed their intention to control the game. In the 5th minute, Lamine Yamal had a clear chance, but his curled shot lacked accuracy. Despite constant pressure, Barcelona lacked sharpness in finishing. Raphinha hit the post, while Ferran Torres and Fermín López both missed good opportunities.
The biggest turning point of the first half came in stoppage time. Dani Olmo was fouled inside the box, and the referee pointed to the penalty spot. However, from the spot, Lamine Yamal struck the post, ending the first 45 minutes with regret for the visitors.
In the second half, the game remained under Barcelona'scontrol. After many efforts, they finally scored the opener thanks to a powerful header from Pau Cubarsí following a precise cross from Jules Koundé. This was the young defender’s first La Liga goal and seemed to promise a victory for Hansi Flick’s team.
However, Girona did not collapse. Just minutes later, the home team capitalized on a defensive mistake by Barcelona to equalize 1-1. Boosted by confidence, Girona played boldly in the final minutes. Goalkeeper Joan García made two incredible saves, but in the 86th minute, Fran Beltrán fired a low, precise shot to seal a 2-1 win for the red and white team.
A late red card couldn’t stop Girona from completing their stunning comeback. Meanwhile, Barcelona paid dearly for wasting chances and moments of defensive lapses.
This defeat is especially disappointing considering Barcelona had won four of their last five away matches against Girona, scoring 12 goals. Failing to secure all three points leaves them two points behind Real Madrid in the standings, as the La Liga title race remains fiercely competitive.
With inconsistent form and limited ability to capitalize on chances, Hansi Flick clearly has much work ahead if he wants to restore Barcelona to the top position in Spain.
