Fans were collectively shocked by a humorous incident on television, which led many to mistakenly believe that Ruben Amorim was about to return to the pitch as a player.
Ruben Amorim, the recently dismissed Manchester United coach suddenly appeared on screen during the match between Cremonese and Genoa in the 25th round of Serie A.
Specifically, viewers were confused when the graphic displayed that the 41-year-old coach was substituted onto the field for the away team in the 89th minute. However, Ruben Amorim retired a decade ago and was just dismissed as Manchester United’s head coach shortly after the New Year. It sounds unbelievable, but it really happened.
The "Amorim" mentioned was actually Alex Amorim, who came on for Morten Frendrup in the 89th minute. The confusion arose because the Serie A broadcast showed Ruben Amorim’s face instead of Alex’s.
One fan wrote: “Wait, is this Ruben Amorim’s son?”
Another humorously commented: “How can we be sure the one who went to Man Utd before was the ‘real’ Amorim?”
Meanwhile, another opinion questioned: “Is this just an editing mistake or a sign that Serie A’s media team is having issues?”
Alex Amorim, 20 years old, joined Genoa from the Portuguese club Alverca for £7 million last month, and the match against Cremonese was his debut.
Vardy started the match but was substituted off in the 58th minute during the goalless draw. Although Alex Amorim only entered late in the game, he almost made an impact. His powerful cross found Caleb Ekuban’s header, but the ball narrowly missed the goal.
Shortly after, Federico Bonazzoli of Cremonese came closest to scoring when his shot hit the crossbar in the final minutes.
As for Ruben Amorim, he remains unemployed since his dismissal but is considered the leading candidate for the Benfica head coach position should Jose Mourinho leave. The former Chelsea, Man Utd, and Tottenham manager is also linked to the Portuguese national team job after this summer’s World Cup, which could open a door for Amorim.
