The tension between Cristiano Ronaldo and Erik ten Hag while both were at Manchester United is being further revealed with significant insights.
Recently, former Red Devils assistant Steve McClaren disclosed there were “many confrontations” between the Portuguese superstar and the Dutch coach during training sessions, conflicts that ultimately led to their dramatic split at the end of 2022.
After returning to Manchester United amid high expectations, Cristiano Ronaldo entered the new season under the new manager Erik ten Hag with many changes in tactical philosophy. The Dutch coach demanded that forwards actively press and act as the first line of defense. However, this became the root cause of profound disagreements.
According to McClaren, Ten Hag firmly insisted that Ronaldo fulfill his assigned role: be the first to press, constantly move, and apply pressure on the opposing defense. “Erik made it very clear: this is your duty. If you don’t do it, you won’t play.”McClaren shared on the podcast The Good, the Bad and the Football. “There were many clashes during training. Erik stood firm on his stance, whereas I think most other coaches might have compromised. Some coaches would, but Erik did not.”- Steve added.
The former England coach said he personally spoke with Ronaldo, explaining that the coaching staff only required him to perform some pressing runs before dropping back to a central position to be ready to receive the ball when the team regained possession. However, adapting to the high-intensity style Ten Hag implemented was not easy for a player who was already 37 at the time.
Importantly, Ten Hag did not yield. McClaren admitted that many other managers might have been more flexible, adjusting the system to suit a star like Ronaldo. But the Dutch strategist held firm: anyone not meeting tactical demands would not get playing time.
The stalemate on the training pitch eventually erupted in Ronaldo’s shocking interview in November 2022. During that conversation, he openly criticized Ten Hag, the club’s infrastructure, and the owners. Notably, the statement “I don’t respect him because he doesn’t respect me” marked the end of their relationship.
Shortly after, Manchester United and Ronaldo officially terminated their contract. This parting not only ended CR7’s second chapter at Old Trafford but also became one of the most controversial events in the club’s history.
