Coach Mikel Arteta addresses the wave of criticism for not signing autographs for supporters outside Emirates Stadium, affirming that every decision was driven by safety and family protection.
Mikel Arteta has officially commented following the backlash on social media regarding a video showing him refusing to sign for fans outside Arsenal’s stadium. The incident happened after Arsenal’s victory over Wigan Athletic in the FA Cup. As he left Emirates by private car, the Spanish coach got stuck in heavy traffic. A fan approached the vehicle, asking him to sign a jersey intended for his son. However, Arteta did not lower the window nor respond to the request, causing the clip to quickly spread and spark debate.
In response to mixed reactions, Arteta asserted that he always values supporters and is willing to sign autographs or take photos under appropriate conditions. However, at that moment, his wife was also in the car, and security was the top priority. “I always try to respect everyone. I’m happy to sign autographs and take photos; it’s part of the job. But there are situations involving safety that we must follow. What has been spread in the media is completely misleading and unfair,” Arteta explained.
It is known that, Arsenal updated security protocols three years ago, requiring players and staff not to lower car windows when approached in unsafe areas. Arteta emphasized feeling “exposed” when surrounded while inside his private vehicle, especially in an era where every moment can be recorded and shared within seconds.
“There are moments and contexts that are inappropriate. At those times, we need protection, because otherwise you are exposed, unable to leave the car, and feel very uncomfortable. But I accept that,” he added.
The 43-year-old coach also affirmed that he maintains positive relationships with fans who show genuine respect and approach in a civilized manner. However, he believes personal boundaries must be respected, especially when family members are present.
This incident once again highlights the pressure public figures face in the social media age. For Arteta, the top priority remains ensuring safety for himself and his family rather than yielding to potentially risky situations.
