On February 19th Beijing time, the 12th day of the Milan Winter Olympics ended with a spectacular day for China, as the team grabbed two gold medals in two hours. Su Yiming claimed the men’s snowboard slopestyle gold, marking China’s first gold of this Games, and Xu Mengtao defended her freestyle skiing women’s aerials title, becoming the first ever to achieve this feat. This remarkable success propelled China’s overall ranking from 19th to 14th—a huge leap forward!

During the first 11 competition days of this event, we struggled to win even a single gold, creating immense pressure for everyone. But on the 12th day, we had two prime opportunities for gold. Su Yiming, who was last Games’ silver medalist, went all out in the men’s snowboard slopestyle event, showing dominant form. He flawlessly executed all three rounds, leading the scoreboard from the first round with a score of 82.41 and maintaining that lead through the next two rounds. Ultimately, he decisively defeated the Japanese competitor to claim the gold. This medal was hugely significant—it was our first gold of this Games, breaking the gold drought and moving us forward. It was truly an emotional moment that brought tears to our eyes!

In the freestyle skiing women’s aerials final held afterward, three of our athletes made it to the final round. All three performed excellently and completed their runs smoothly. The five-time Olympian and defending champion Xu Mengtao showed remarkable composure under pressure, delivering a perfect performance with a high score of 112.90—higher than her winning score at the previous Olympics. It was an incredible display of dominance, proving she is the one to beat in big competitions. However, the event was not without controversy: the last competitor from Australia received the silver medal despite touching the snow upon landing, raising serious questions about the judging. This decision prevented China from sweeping gold, silver, and bronze, which was deeply frustrating!

The latest gold medal standings have been updated: Norway leads with 15 gold medals, firmly holding the top spot. China’s explosive day with two gold medals in one day propelled them up five places to 14th, surpassing their longtime rival South Korea. It’s truly a satisfying and proud moment—well done!
