On February 19th Beijing time, the Milan Winter Olympics are progressing intensely. In last night’s freestyle skiing women’s aerials final, defending champion Xu Mengtao achieved a perfect run, scoring 112.90 points to successfully claim the championship and defend her title. She is the first athlete in this event to achieve back-to-back wins, making her a historic figure. At 35 years old, Xu Mengtao’s strength is undeniable. Nonetheless, this competition sparked major controversy: the Australian athlete made mistakes yet still secured second place, denying China a clean sweep of gold, silver, and bronze. Moreover, after the Australian competitor finished, a surprising scene unfolded where her own teammates were stunned and couldn’t believe it, forgetting to celebrate with Xu Mengtao!

The women’s aerials event in freestyle skiing is one of our strongest disciplines and one of the few gold medal opportunities. We had a strong group advantage with four athletes contending for the gold, including the defending champion from the previous Beijing Winter Olympics, Xu Mengtao. Our goal was to capture this gold medal!

In the end, three of our athletes advanced to the final gold medal round, competing in order of ranking. Shao Qi went first, executing her moves very well, but the low difficulty limited her score to 101.9 points. Next, Xu Mengtao performed flawlessly with impeccable aerial form and landing, earning a high score of 112.90. Kong Fanyu also performed well, but her quality was not as high as Xu’s, scoring 101.31 points. The last to compete was the Australian athlete, who showed good aerial form but clearly touched the snow with her hand on landing; nonetheless, she scored a high 102.17 points, securing second place!

With everyone’s performances complete, the medals were awarded. Xu Mengtao and the runner-up Scott embraced wildly to celebrate the moment. Meanwhile, Kong Fanyu and Shao Qi were left stunned, unable to believe the Australian athlete took second place. Shao Qi’s silver was downgraded to bronze, and Kong Fanyu’s bronze dropped to fourth place. It must be said the judging was really unfair, deliberately preventing China from sweeping gold, silver, and bronze—a huge controversy indeed!
