Malaysian media cautious about Vietnam's naturalized star players

Malaysian media caution their team regarding the power of Vietnam’s naturalized players, while also commending Kim Sang-sik’s team for their comprehensive readiness for the crucial Group F fixture.

Malaysian media have just issued a warning to their home team about the threat posed by Vietnam’s naturalized players, as the two sides get ready to face each other in the final round of Group F in the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers on March 31.

The New Straits Times reported that Vietnam may call up as many as eight naturalized players for this important match. According to sources from the Malaysian daily, coach Kim Sang-sik is considering strengthening all three lines to bring a comprehensive upgrade to the team’s quality.

The article highlights the transformation process of the Vietnamese team which is expected to take place from defense, midfield, to attack if these naturalized players are given opportunities. Although the exact list was not revealed, Malaysian media believe potential members include Nguyễn Filip, Đặng Văn Lâm, Lê Giang Patrik, defender Cao Pendant Quang Vinh, Đỗ Phi Long (formerly known as Gustavo), midfielder Đỗ Hoàng Hên (formerly Hendrio), Trần Thành Trung, and forward Nguyễn Xuân Son.

Among them, center-back Đỗ Phi Longis especially noted for his outstanding physique. According to New Straits Times, the inclusion of the Brazil-born player could significantly improve Vietnam’s ability in one-on-one duels and aerial battles, areas previously considered weaknesses.

Beyond the technical aspect, Malaysian media also assess that Vietnam has prepared more meticulously for this “group final.” Currently, Malaysia leads Group F with 15 points from five straight wins, while Vietnam sits second with 12 points.

Vietnam will field up to eight naturalized players against Malaysia

To claim the top spot and direct qualification to the final round, Vietnam must win by at least a four-goal margin. However, the group standings could shift if Malaysia loses points due to allegations of fielding ineligible players in previous matches against Nepal and Vietnam.

Therefore, the March 31 clash promises to be decisive, not only in terms of competition but also significantly impacting the Group F standings in the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers.
