Coach Liam Rosenior was visibly frustrated as Chelsea conceded a late equalizer to Burnley, resulting in a 1-1 draw, acknowledging that his team had “squandered two crucial points” bitterly.
Chelsea started perfectly with Joao Pedro scoring very early. The home side dominated the game, created numerous chances, and seemed set to close out the match easily. However, the turning point came when Wesley Fofana received a second yellow card and was sent off in the final 20 minutes.
Despite being a player down, Chelsea maintained control but made a fatal error during a set piece. In the 93rd minute, Ziann Flemming leapt high to head the ball into the net, snatching a point back for Burnley, silencing the crowd at Stamford Bridge.
After the match, Rosenior openly admitted: “We should have finished the game. After scoring the opener, the whole team was too content to keep possession instead of being ruthless. In this league, if you’re not ruthless and don’t defend set pieces well, you will be punished.”
The English coach particularly emphasized their weakness defending dead-ball situations: “We wasted two points today. We don’t have enough clean sheets. We lack the basic fundamentals in defending set pieces. That’s something I need to fix.”
He also admitted that some players failed to fulfill their defensive duties in the decisive moment: “There were players assigned specific tasks on the pitch, but they didn’t execute them properly. That cost us two points.”
Still, Rosenior did not want to put all the blame on Fofana’s red card: “We should have won that match even with 10 men. To dominate completely and still fail to close out the game is truly very, very disappointing.”
This draw caused Chelsea to lose ground in the race for the top 4, while also exposing persistent problems that Rosenior knows he must urgently address if the team wants to progress further in the remainder of the season.
