UEFA has decided to temporarily suspend a Benfica player for one match following allegations of discriminatory behavior directed at Vinícius during the first leg against Real Madrid, causing his absence in the crucial rematch.
UEFA has imposed a temporary suspension on Benfica’s Gianluca Prestianni ahead of the Champions League play-off second leg against Real Madrid on the early morning of 26/2 (Vietnam time), after accusations that he used racist language against Vinicius Junior in the first leg.
Vinicius reported that Prestianni insulted him with racist remarks after he scored in Real Madrid’s 1-0 victory over Benfica. During the incident, the Brazilian forward celebrated near the home team’s corner flag, provoking a strong reaction from several Benfica players. Vinicius’s teammate at Real, Kylian Mbappe, also confirmed hearing the offensive words.
According to sources from ESPN, Prestianni admitted to UEFA that he used offensive language related to sexual orientation rather than racial discrimination.
While awaiting the official outcome of UEFA’s investigation, Prestianni will be ineligible to play in the second leg. If found guilty of racial discrimination under UEFA disciplinary rules, he could face a ban of up to 10 matches.
UEFA’s statement reads: “After appointing an Ethics and Disciplinary Inspector (EDI) to investigate allegations of discriminatory conduct during the match between Benfica and Real Madrid on 17/2/2026, The UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body (CEDB) has decided to provisionally suspend Gianluca Prestianni for one UEFA club competition matchdue to indications of a breach of Article 14 of the UEFA Disciplinary Regulations concerning discriminatory behavior.”
UEFA also emphasized that this provisional suspension does not affect the final decision once the investigation is complete.
Benfica has confirmed receiving notification of the one-match temporary suspension for their player. In an official statement, the club expressed regret over being unable to field Prestianni while the investigation continues and indicated they will appeal, acknowledging that the timing of the process may not significantly impact the second leg.
Benfica reaffirmed its strong commitment to combating all forms of racism and discrimination, considering it a core value in the club’s history and identity, closely tied to the global community and icons like Eusébio.
