Despite being rated higher, the Vietnam women's futsal team surprisingly suffered a 0-2 defeat against Australia.
The Vietnam women's futsal team did not start as expected in Group B of the 2026 Southeast Asian Women's Futsal Championship held on the afternoon of February 24, when they lost 0-2 to the Australian women's futsal team, in a match where coach Nguyễn Đình Hoàng’s players created many chances but failed to capitalize.
After the match, coach Nguyễn Đình Hoàng gave a candid assessment of the team’s performance. He said: “We played well, controlled the game proactively, possessed the ball better, and created many scoring opportunities. However, the players wasted many clear chances. We lost on a set-piece situation. This result does not meet the team’s expectations. It is a big lesson to prepare for upcoming matches. Congratulations to Australia. They fought hard.”
This defeat puts Vietnam’s women's futsal team at a disadvantage in the race to qualify. Nevertheless, the 1979-born coach remains confident in his players’ ability to bounce back in the remaining group stage matches.
He emphasized: “This loss makes it much harder for the Vietnam women's futsal team. As I mentioned before, defending the championship is very challenging. Although difficult, the coaching staff believes the players will perform well and achieve better results in the next two matches.”the captain of the Vietnam women's futsal team expressed.
The Vietnam women's futsal team lost 0-2 to Australia in their opening Group B match. However, coach Nguyễn Đình Hoàng’s squad still has upcoming games to adjust their tactics, improve finishing efficiency, and aim to advance beyond the group stage at the 2026 Southeast Asian Women's Futsal Championship.
In the next round, Vietnam’s women's futsal team will face the Philippines. In their opening match, the Philippines defeated Myanmar 1-0, currently sharing the top two spots in the group with Australia.
