As the 2026 World Cup draws near, Lionel Messi candidly shared his thoughts about the chance of Argentina meeting Mexico once more in the competition.
Less than four months before the opening match, fans eagerly await Argentina’s journey to defend their title won at the 2022 FIFA World Cup. In this context, the Argentine captain spoke about the prospect of facing Mexico again.
Following their most recent encounter in Qatar, where Argentina secured a 2-0 victory, the rivalry between the two teams has intensified. Despite Argentina’s dominant head-to-head record, Messi admitted he does not want to face Mexico again in this World Cup.
Messi revealed in a discussion with goalkeeper Nahuel Guzman on the podcast Miro de Atrás: “We often meet at the World Cup and other major tournaments, in crucial moments. The last time was in the group stage… but now it’s a great opportunity for you and the US because playing at home always has an impact, one way or another. Anyway, hopefully this time we don’t have to face each other.”
The 2022 group stage match was critical for Argentina, as a loss could have led to early elimination. Messi admitted the team entered the match with fears of being knocked out at the group stage.
He said: “Honestly, we went into that match with fear. Deep down, you think about everything you’ve been through and the possibility of being eliminated in the first round, especially against Mexico, a team that always gives us trouble. We were afraid of losing and not progressing.”
After the match in Qatar, a video circulated on social media showing Messi seemingly stepping on a Mexico jersey. This image angered many fans, including famous boxer Canelo Alvarez, who publicly criticized Messi online.
However, in a recent interview, Messi clarified that it was a misunderstanding and exaggerated. He explained: “That’s when the anger from the Mexican side began, but it wasn’t about disrespect. It was a very normal situation in any match and locker room. Anyone who has been in a locker room understands this.”
The Inter Miami CF star said players often take off their jerseys and place them on the floor because they are soaked with sweat, including their own shirts. “I also took off my shirt and threw it down like that, it’s completely normal. I think the situation was blown out of proportion,” Messi added.
