Malaysia national team coach sets a bigger goal than just a win against Vietnam

Coach Peter Cklamovski is focused not only on immediate objectives such as the Asian Cup qualifiers but also on raising the overall standard of Malaysian football.

According to New Straits Times, there is currently much discussion surrounding Malaysia’s upcoming Asian Cup qualifier match against Vietnam, along with the issue of suspended naturalized players… Notably, Malaysia’s head coach, Peter Cklamovski has shared the long journeywith the aim of leaving Malaysian football stronger than when he took charge.

Cklamovski revealed in an exclusive interview with Timesport: “There is a bigger picture here. I have to focus on the present but also do what is right for the country and plan for the future. Some young players will be given opportunities and will challenge the main squad, while experienced players must improve their level. That is how we grow together.”

Cklamovski believes leadership is not just about one individual. He said: “Here, everyone is a captain, everyone is a leader. Not just one person… that spirit must come from all. This mindset drives the team, creates competition, and inspires the next generation.

Cklamovski applies a systematic and professional selection process. He affirmed: “I monitor performance, gather data, and build competitiveness within the team. Players understand they must fight for their place, which boosts performance. We aim to win together, develop together, and prepare for the future. My goal is that by the end of my term, Malaysian football will be in a better position.

Amid continuing uncertainties related to seven naturalized players awaiting appeal at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), Cklamovski remains optimistic. The seven players — Gabriel Palmero, Facundo Garces, Rodrigo Holgado, Imanol Machuca, Joao Figueiredo, Jon Irazabal, and Hector Hevel — have been banned by FIFA for one year due to falsified documents.

He emphasized: “I live in a land of hope. If the players return, they will continue to be part of the team and contribute to the journey towards 2026. Our mindset is to compete in the Asian Cup to win, and that is our daily motivation.”

His vision extends beyond the national team to the entire football ecosystem of the country. He said: “Better pitches, improved training facilities, and modern stadiums not only benefit the national team. They upgrade the league, enhance fan experiences, attract sponsors, and develop the sport. When conditions improve, the product improves, and everyone benefits.
