The former Liverpool star, Jamie Carragher, sparked a wave of reactions on social media after unveiling his top 10 best Premier League goalkeepers of all time.
The ranking, which he revealed live on Sky Sports, quickly became a hot topic of intense debate, with many fans even labeling the selections as “criminal choices.”
Interestingly, when Carragher announced the list, Manchester United legend Edwin van der Sar was present. However, despite winning four Premier League titles and being a key figure during the successful era at Old Trafford, Van der Sar was only placed sixth.
Topping the list is Petr Cech. The Czech goalkeeper won the Premier League four times with Chelsea and is regarded as one of the most consistent goalkeepers in the league’s history. Right behind him is Peter Schmeichel, the legendary goalkeeper of Manchester United in the 1990s.
The third spot goes to Alisson Becker, currently playing for Liverpool. This choice sparked much controversy since Alisson is still active and does not have as extensive a record as many predecessors. David de Gea ranks fourth, while Thibaut Courtois is fifth, thanks to his successful stint at Chelsea.
Following Van der Sar is Manchester City's Ederson in seventh place. Everton legend Neville Southall is eighth, Arsenal’s David Seaman is ninth, and rounding out the top 10 is Pepe Reina, another familiar Liverpool figure.
However, what upset the public most were the notable omissions. Carragher’s former England teammate David James was left out. Premier League winner Joe Hart with Manchester City was also excluded. Legendary Jens Lehmann, who won an unbeaten title with Arsenal, was not mentioned either. Additionally, Newcastle United hero Shay Given was overlooked.
On social media, criticism erupted fiercely. Many fans argued that placing Alisson above Van der Sar was unfair, while others questioned Carragher’s evaluation criteria. Clearly, ranking Premier League legends is a sensitive topic, as each generation has its own icons.
Whether agreed with or opposed, it is undeniable that Carragher’s ranking generated significant media buzz, reigniting lively debates about the status of goalkeepers in Premier League history.
