The return fixtures of the Champions League Play-off round brought numerous surprises and thrilling games, with the biggest shock coming from Bodo/Glimt, alongside the remarkable escape by the Serie A team.
The Italian representatives entered the second leg of the Play-off Champions League facing many concerns. All had lost in the first leg and were at risk of being eliminated from Europe's premier competition. However, Atalanta put in a brave performance, preserving some pride for Serie A.
Atalanta lost 0-2 to Dortmund in the first leg and approached the second leg with doubts. Yet, Gianluca Scamacca’s goal in the 5th minute ignited hope for the home side. Subsequently, Davide Zappacosta and Mario Pasalic scored, putting Atalanta ahead. Karim Adeyemi then scored for Dortmund, leveling the aggregate at 3-3.
Just when the match seemed destined for extra time, Atalanta’s hero Lazar Samardzic struck in the 90+8 minute, securing a 4-3 aggregate win. This victory meant a lot not only for Atalanta but also helped Serie A maintain its stature in the Champions League.
After defeating both Man City and Atletico Madrid to reach the playoff round, Bodo/Glimt continued to surprise by beating Inter Milan 3-1 in Norway. However, few believed they could hold onto this advantage when playing away in Italy.
Nevertheless, Bodo/Glimt demonstrated why they could topple top European clubs. The Norwegian side showed great courage in the second leg, defeating Inter 2-1 at Giuseppe Meazza, thereby eliminating the reigning Champions League runners-up in a thoroughly deserved manner.
Compared to Atalanta, Juventus faced an even tougher task after losing 2-5 to Galatasaray in the first leg. However, the Old Lady played brilliantly, scoring three consecutive goals to level the score at 5-5, forcing extra time.
Yet Juventus couldn’t maintain focus in extra time. Victor Osimhen and Baris Alper Yilmaz scored for Galatasaray, ending the match 3-2 but 5-7 on aggregate, resulting in Juventus’s painful elimination.
Aside from the surprises of Atalanta and Bodo/Glimt, the stronger teams or those with first-leg advantages all wrapped up their second legs smoothly.
Atletico Madrid crushed Club Brugge 4-1 at home, finishing the tie 7-4 on aggregate. Newcastle defeated Qarabag 3-2, with a 9-3 aggregate score over two legs. A 0-0 draw against Olympiakos was enough for Leverkusen to advance, having a two-goal cushion from the first leg. Meanwhile, a 2-2 draw in the second leg allowed PSG to maintain their one-goal advantage over Monaco.
Real Madrid entered the second leg holding a one-goal lead. Although Rafa Silva equalized for Benfica in the 14th minute, Aurelien Tchouameni restored Real’s lead just two minutes later. Los Blancos crushed Benfica’s hopes in the 80th minute thanks to the familiar name, Vinicius.
With a 2-1 win in the second leg and a 3-1 aggregate score, Real Madrid confidently advanced to the round of 16. This was a sweet revenge for Los Blancos after being defeated by Benfica in the final group stage match, which cost them a top-eight finish.
