Former Manchester United star advised to retire

Edinson Cavani's glorious career is at a bitter crossroads, with the Uruguayan forward being jeered by his own supporters in the Boca Juniors jersey.

From being a "box predator" who once dominated European football, Cavani now faces the prospect of ending his playing journey amidst whistles and skepticism.

At 37 years old, Cavani is no longer the fearsome goal-scoring machine he was during his peak years at Napoli or Paris Saint-Germain. Later, he had spells with Manchester United and Valencia before deciding to join Boca Juniors with hopes of bringing his class and experience to the Argentine club.

However, reality hasn't matched the dream. Since February 2023, Cavani has suffered 13 different injuries and missed a total of 36 matches. Persistent fitness issues have prevented him from maintaining consistent form. Although he's scored 28 goals in 81 appearances for Boca, these numbers haven't been enough to satisfy the famously demanding Argentine fans.

In the 0-0 draw with Racing Club, Cavani was given his first start since September. But instead of shining, he disappointed with a lackluster performance lacking in dynamism. The boos from the stands served as a harsh reminder that time spares no one. He was even excluded from the squad for the subsequent cup match against Gimnasia Chivilcoy.

Amid this situation, Argentine football legend and 1986 World Cup champion Oscar Ruggeri has bluntly advised Cavani to consider retirement. According to Ruggeri: "Cavani must stop. It's a shame that such a star is insulted in that way, being booed, after such a massive career. I don't know him personally, only met him a few times, but it pains me to see him. Playing in Argentina at nearly 40 is very tough. In my opinion, he hasn't made the decision because he still wants to turn things around and leave with honor."

The question now is no longer about how talented Cavani is, but rather how much longer he can endure in the demanding football environment of Argentina. With a career that once conquered Europe's biggest stages, ending his career to the sound of boos is certainly not what fans wish for him.

Whatever decision he makes, Cavani still deserves to be remembered as one of the finest strikers of his generation. But sometimes, knowing when to stop is also a way to preserve one's legacy.
