OFFICIAL: MU Announces Amount to Pay When Terminating Amorim

The decision to part ways with Coach Ruben Amorim has left Manchester United with significant financial repercussions.

According to documents filed with the New York Stock Exchange, the Old Trafford club may have to pay an amount up to £15.9 million related to terminating the contract of the Portuguese strategist.

Notably, this information was released just one day after Manchester United reported a £32.6 million profit in its Q2 financial report for the period ending December 31, 2025. However, behind that positive profit figure lies a financial "clot" named Ruben Amorim.

Specifically, the club confirmed it has written off an amortization fee of £6.3 million, an amount related to the deal bringing Amorim from Sporting CP to Old Trafford in November 2024. Simultaneously, they have also provisioned £15.9 million, the maximum potential payment for Amorim and his coaching staff. Although the filing does not specify the conditions triggering this expense, many sources suggest it is linked to the future employment of the 41-year-old manager.

The Amorim deal was costly from the very beginning. Previously, Manchester United paid £11 million to release him from his contract with Sporting, while the dismissal of his predecessor Erik ten Hag cost an additional £10.4 million. In total, the coaching changes involving Amorim could see the Red Devils "evaporate" up to £37.3 million.

Professionally, Amorim did not leave a strongly positive mark. In 63 matches managing Manchester United, he won 25. The team finished the season in 15th place in the Premier League, their worst performance since the 1973-74 season. Furthermore, Manchester United also lost in the Europa League final and suffered a shocking elimination from the Carabao Cup by Grimsby, a team playing in League Two.

At the time of Amorim's dismissal, Manchester United was sixth in the league table and was reported to have had a major conflict with Football Director Jason Wilcox. Subsequently, former midfielder Michael Carrick was appointed interim until the end of the season and quickly provided a morale boost. The Red Devils have now risen to fourth place and are strong contenders for a Champions League spot.

In another development, Manchester United has also increased its credit facility by £50 million, raising the total facility to £400 million, although they currently still have £215 million in debt. The financial report also mentions providing sponsorship services worth £600,000 to Ineos Automotive Ltd, a company within Sir Jim Ratcliffe's group.

Clearly, the decision to dismiss Ruben Amorim is not only a professional turning point but also a financial test for Manchester United. In the context of the club striving to rebuild and return to the top, every mistake in the managerial seat comes at a very high price.
