Following Cristiano Ronaldo's investment in UD Almeria, the relevant Spanish regulatory bodies have formally outlined the rules concerning a player's eligibility to compete for a team under their own ownership.
According to the newspaper AS, the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) enforces a strict clause. Specifically, the RFEF prohibits active professional players from having business interests while simultaneously participating in domestic competitions. Therefore, despite any desire, Cristiano Ronaldo will not be allowed to play for UD Almeria, the club currently competing in Spain's second tier. This regulation applies not only to Almeria but to all clubs within the Spanish league system.
This rule was passed in February 2025 to safeguard the transparency and fairness of domestic competitions, preventing potential interference from active players. It was established following controversies surrounding Gerard Pique, who drew attention while still playing for Barcelona for using his private company to mediate negotiations between the RFEF and Saudi Arabia regarding hosting the Spanish Super Cup.
Previously, Almeria's coach Joan Francesc Ferrer Sicilia stated he would welcome Ronaldo if an opportunity for collaboration arose. The Spanish strategist shared: "That's a question for him, but if it were to happen, it would be special and fantastic. This is his club, and if he wishes to continue playing, regardless of the coach, the team would welcome him with open arms. I have absolutely no doubt about that."
Recently, the Portuguese superstar has also been linked with a potential return to Europe, but he has publicly affirmed his desire to remain committed to Saudi Arabia, where his playing contract runs until 2027.
On the pitch, Ronaldo continues to maintain excellent form for Al Nassr, having scored 21 goals in the domestic league this season. The forward, born in 1985, aims to compete for the national championship with his team and pursue success in the AFC Champions League Two, demonstrating his significant influence even in the latter stages of his career.
