Manchester City is prepared to break the world transfer record to sign an English Premier League defender.

As reported by TEAMtalk, Manchester City is willing to shatter the global transfer record for a defender this summer in order to secure the signing of Tino Livramento.

The Etihad Stadium club has been pursuing Livramento since last summer, while Newcastle United has been attempting to persuade the former Chelsea player to sign a new contract.

Negotiations for a contract extension actually began early last year, but as of now, the Magpies have yet to make any significant breakthrough.

Livramento's current contract runs until 2028. It is understood that the player is not pushing to leave Newcastle, but Manchester City is confident he would be interested in a move to the Etihad.

Manchester City is ready to break the world transfer record for a defender in the summer window to sign Tino Livramento.

Following the departure of Kyle Walker, Manchester City has yet to find a long-term solution for the right-back position – an issue that has concerned the coaching staff in recent seasons. Livramento is seen as the ideal candidate due to his pace and comprehensive abilities in both attack and defense. To secure his signature, the Manchester club is prepared to spend heavily.

Currently, the world record fee for a full-back belongs to Paris Saint-Germain's £60 million signing of Achraf Hakimi from Inter Milan in 2021.

This figure is slightly higher than the British record, which is held by Manchester City themselves from their £57 million purchase of Joao Cancelo from Juventus in 2019. However, sources indicate Newcastle would only agree to negotiations for a fee of around £70 million for Livramento. If the deal goes through, it would almost certainly set a new record fee for a full-back.

Manchester City already holds the world record for the most expensive center-back following the signing of Josko Gvardiol, and now they are ready to set a new benchmark for the full-back position.

This season, the right-back role has primarily been assigned to Matheus Nunes – a player who was originally a midfielder when he joined from Wolves. Rico Lewis is another option, though he can also be deployed in midfield.

In other news, Manchester City is reportedly leading the race to sign Elliot Anderson this summer. The talent, who came through Newcastle's academy and currently plays for Nottingham Forest, is also a target for Manchester United. Nevertheless, Pep Guardiola's side hopes to outmaneuver their city rivals and is prepared to let two influential first-team players depart.
