Vietnam vs Indonesia: A wake-up call after the stumble (March 2, 3:00 PM, TV360 live broadcast of the Southeast Asian Futsal third-place match)

The 2-4 loss to Thailand in the 2026 Southeast Asian Women's Futsal Championship semifinals served as a crucial reality check for the Vietnamese women's squad. Yet, their campaign continues with Coach Nguyen Dinh Hoang's team still facing the third-place playoff against Indonesia.

Experts observe that the defeat to host Thailand on February 28th was an inevitable outcome given the preceding events. It was not merely a momentary lapse, but the consequence of underlying issues.

Right from the group stage, the starting lineup featuring Ngoc Han, Thanh Ngan, Phuong Anh, and K'Thua failed to deliver the expected explosiveness. Key players like Thanh Ngan and Phuong Anh, who were once the soul of the team's style, lacked their usual sharpness and could no longer make the difference in decisive moments.

At the back, goalkeeper Thuy Linh also could not maintain her peak form, causing the defensive system to lose its solid foundation. When crucial components are not at their best, the entire machine operates disjointedly.

Faced with this reality, Coach Nguyen Dinh Hoang had to adjust his tactical axis, granting more opportunities to the group of Nguyet Vi, Thuy Trang, Bien Thi Hang, and Thu Xuan. This attacking unit is energetic, plays with passion, and brought new vitality to the squad.

It was no coincidence that Thu Xuan's opening goal in the semifinal left the stands at Terminal 21 Korat silent for a few seconds. However, futsal is a game of synchronization. When only one unit functions smoothly while the rest lack stability, it is difficult to maintain balance against a quality opponent, especially one buoyed by strong home support.

At the moment when composure was needed to maintain rhythm and experience to handle pressure, the team showed a certain level of immaturity. Young players like Anh My or Vu Thi Hoa were brought on with hopes of creating a breakthrough, but contrary to Coach Nguyen Dinh Hoang's expectations, his pupils made errors leading to the pivotal equalizer.

Beyond internal issues, this year's tournament also reflects the rapid evolution of women's futsal in the region. Australia demonstrated the caliber of a top continental football nation, despite having played futsal for less than two years. Meanwhile, Indonesia is also accelerating noticeably, building on their success at the 33rd SEA Games to challenge traditional regional powers.

And it is Indonesia who will be Vietnam's opponent in this year's third-place match. This is not merely a contest for a bronze medal, but also a test of character.

After the semifinal fall, the most important thing is how the team gets back up. A victory would help Coach Nguyen Dinh Hoang's players regain their confidence and conclude the tournament with their heads held high.

From a broader perspective, the defeat to Thailand is a necessary warning bell. The glories of two years ago may have inadvertently obscured gaps in squad depth and the training system. The domestic women's futsal league needs upgrading to produce a larger and more specialized pool of players.

Furthermore, the intense schedule of matches and training camps over many months, without adequate rest periods, undoubtedly affected the players' physical and mental condition.
