Mascherano: 'Messi is the greatest player in history'

Admitting personal tactical errors, Coach Javier Mascherano offered heartfelt praise for Lionel Messi's impact and caliber following the comeback victory over Orlando City.

The reigning MLS Cup champion completely lost control of the game and let the opponent take a 2-0 lead within just the first 45 minutes. The disjointed play worried fans about another humiliating defeat after the opening loss to LAFC.

Right at the start of the second half, Coach Javier Mascherano made decisive personnel adjustments by bringing on Mateo Silvetti. This change immediately paid off with a goal to reduce the deficit in the 49th minute.

Speaking about this decision, Mascherano candidly took responsibility: “When you have to make a substitution at halftime, it’s because you failed in your match planning as a coach. I don’t like that; it’s my fault.”

At the most difficult moment, Lionel Messi stepped up just in time to prove his worth as a top-tier star. He scored a brilliant brace, including a stunning free-kick —his 70th career goal from a set piece—and an assist set up for Segovia.

Witnessing the dazzling performance of his former teammate, Mascherano couldn’t hide his admiration: “As I’ve said a thousand times, he is clearly the greatest player to ever play this sport. He is a leader. Like a true captain, that radiates to everyone.”

The Argentine strategist emphasized that Messi’s composure helped the younger players around him perform with more confidence, transforming a struggling squad back into champions.

Even though Messi was the scorer, Mascherano gave full credit to the team spirit. He stated that in the second half, the team played without any complex tactics, relying solely on courage and resilience.

“This victory is entirely thanks to the players. The whole team played like champions in the second half. There was no special tactic. Just heart, bravery on the ball, and determination,” Mascherano shared.

The 4-2 comeback win not only gave Inter Miami their first 3 points of the 2026 season but also proved that with an inspired Messi on the field and a responsible Mascherano on the bench, Miami remains the strongest contender for the title.
