VAR sparks controversy, Ha Tinh coach speaks up to defend

Coach Nguyen Cong Manh of Ha Tinh asserts that VAR and the referee fulfilled their roles properly even though it consumed much time.

Coach Nguyen Cong Manh of Ha Tinh evaluates that the referee team worked professionally during the 1-0 victory over Thanh Hoa in round 15 of V.League 2025/26, particularly in the controversial VAR incident in the first half. According to him, the clear explanation from the referee helped both teams understand the decision made.

After the match, the tactician of Ha Tinh stated that he respects the decision of referee Hoang Thanh Binh. He considers the overall match management reasonable and transparent. “I am not saying this to defend the referee, but from my personal perspective, they made the correct decision. The referee called both captains to explain very clearly, so I see that as a professional way of working.”Coach Nguyen Cong Manh shared.

The controversial incident occurred in the 19th minute when Thanh Hoa striker Rimario fell in the penalty area after a challenge from behind by Tan Tai. Initially, the referee allowed play to continue, but then received a signal from VAR and stopped the match to review the footage.

After nearly 10 minutes reviewing the situation, the referee team determined Rimario was in an offside position before the contact occurred. Therefore, Thanh Hoa was not awarded a penalty. According to Coach Nguyen Cong Manh, the referee also clearly explained this decision. “The referee clearly stated that player Rimario received the ball in an offside position beforehand, so they had to address that violation first. Personally, I found that explanation very clear.”he said.

The match was tense with many fierce plays, but it waited until added time for a goal. In the 90+3rd minute, from a free kick on the flank, the ball was lofted into the penalty area and Helerson leaped high to head a dangerous shot, defeating goalkeeper Eli Nie to score the sole goal, securing the win for Ha Tinh.

Coach Nguyen Cong Manh believes this result holds great significance for the whole team after a series of unfavorable matches. “We went through a long period without winning and dropped quite a few points after the Lunar New Year. Therefore, today’s victory helps the entire team relieve pressure and regain confidence.”he stated.
