Maguire willing to renew contract with Manchester United at £100,000 per week for one year! Sign before World Cup, will appeal to enter national team

According to British media "TEAMtalk," Harry Maguire has not yet renewed his contract with Manchester United, but he is willing to accept a salary reduction of approximately £4.7 million per year, signing a one-year deal with an extension option. The 33-year-old Maguire currently earns £190,000 per week; the aforementioned reduction would bring his weekly wage down to £100,000.

Maguire is now free to negotiate with any overseas club, even sign a preliminary agreement, and join for free this summer. However, he has not done so; British media reports that he rejected offers from AC Milan, Napoli, and Saudi Arabian Professional League investors, determined to stay at Manchester United.

His home is in Sheffield, South Yorkshire in central England, very close to Manchester. As a traditional Englishman, Maguire's reluctance to leave his homeland is the most important reason for his desire to stay.

Carrick and Manchester United teammates also support Maguire's contract renewal, believing the club should keep him. Maguire has previously received recognition from Sir Alex Ferguson; after the 2018 World Cup, when asked about rumors of United signing him, the Scotsman replied: "They should take that lad into the meeting room and not let him out unless he signs!"

Unfortunately, that year Mourinho wanted to sign Maguire for £70 million, but United deemed it too expensive and did not buy him, leading to a rift with Mourinho. A year later, Ed Woodward signed Maguire for Ole Gunnar Solskjær, spending a record £80 million transfer fee.

Legend Gary Neville also supports Manchester United keeping Maguire, commenting: "Without doubt, Maguire is a top defender. There's a reason United spent so much money on him. The resilience he has shown at United is first-class; most players couldn't handle the pressure he faced."

Besides contract renewal, Maguire has other matters to worry about recently. Just before Manchester United lost 1-2 to Newcastle United, his arrest case in Greece, six years later, resulted in a conviction for assault, resisting arrest, and bribery.

The Greek court again sentenced Maguire to a suspended prison term, but the sentence was reduced to 15 months from the original 21 months.

In August 2020, during a vacation, Maguire was arrested after a fight outside a bar while defending his sister. That same year, he was convicted; after appeal, the case was sent back for retrial. His retrial was postponed four times, the last being in October 2025, because court documents were not translated into English.

Maguire was initially fined, but the retrial did not impose a monetary penalty. Maguire also rejected multiple settlement offers of £43,500, as he is determined to clear his name through legal channels. Now, Maguire's lawyers will appeal to the Greek Supreme Court to try to exonerate him.

Maguire naturally did not appear in court; he was preparing for the Premier League match. When trailing in score, Bruno Fernandes dropped back to play as a defensive midfielder to organize, while Maguire rushed into the opponent's penalty area to act as a center forward for headers, indicating United had largely abandoned normal organization. Unfortunately, Maguire couldn't create a miracle this time.

During the match, Maguire was repeatedly emotional, even shouting at assistant coach Steve Holland. After the game, he persistently complained to the referee team. Maguire's displeasure is understandable; the match day coincided with his 33rd birthday, yet he received two blows: a sentencing and a team loss.

Off the field, the Manchester United center-back has consistently strongly denied any wrongdoing that year, and his agent privately expressed reservations about the handling of the case against him.

Maguire's lawyers insist that during the appeal period, he has no criminal record, thus he can freely travel to the United States for the World Cup this summer. Tuchel recently hinted he might recall Maguire, but obtaining U.S. entry permission and a visa depends crucially on whether he has a criminal record.

Sky Sports reports that Maguire's lawyers have notified Greek authorities of plans to appeal to the Athens Supreme Court, determined to clear his name. His legal team believes the prosecution's charges have flaws and questions the conduct of those responsible for prosecuting the English defender.

Under U.S. regulations, individuals with criminal records involving "moral turpitude" are likely to be denied entry; these crimes include theft, fraud, drug-related offenses, violent acts, and bribery—Maguire is charged with two of these.

Professional lawyers told Sky Sports that since Maguire was sentenced in a country outside the UK and the sentence is suspended, it should not affect temporary visa applications related to the World Cup.

However, procedurally, if Maguire is selected for the England squad traveling to the U.S. for the World Cup in May while still facing criminal conviction, he may have to apply for an exception. This would require a U.S. senator to sponsor him, followed by strict scrutiny by U.S. immigration authorities.

Sports stars with criminal records, such as Conor McGregor and Diego Maradona, have been allowed entry into the United States.

But Maguire must also be cautious about Trump; the U.S. President has final authority on allowing foreigners entry, and Trump recently publicly expressed dissatisfaction with UK Prime Minister Starmer's lack of support, potentially creating obstacles for the England team as retaliation.
