Liverpool secured a 3-1 victory over Wolves to advance to the FA Cup quarter-finals, but manager Arne Slot still pointed out aspects that left him unsatisfied.
Early morning March 7 (Vietnam time), Liverpool visited Wolves' stadium in the FA Cup quarter-finals. Following a disappointing loss to the same opponent in the Premier League days earlier, manager Arne Slot and his team entered the match with strong determination to regain confidence and their image.
Although the outcome this time was completely different, the Dutch coach noted that the actual flow of the two matches wasn't vastly different. Sharing post-match, he said: “We controlled the ball extensively, they created one opportunity and scored—quite similar to the match three days ago.”
According to Slot, the biggest difference lay in Liverpool's ability to capitalize on opportunities. “We created more chances compared to the previous match, and that's why we could secure the win today,” he explained. Liverpool attacked proactively from the start and continuously pressured Wolves' goal.
The first half witnessed numerous opportunities. Cody Gakpo headed a shot that hit the post but the goal wasn't awarded due to an offside violation. Alexis Mac Allister also had a dangerous shot forcing goalkeeper Sam Johnstone to make a save, while Joe Gomez and young player Rio Ngumoha missed notable chances.
The turning point came early in the second half when Andy Robertson opened the scoring with a beautiful long-range shot from about 20 meters. Just three minutes later, the Scottish defender contributed again by crossing for Mohamed Salah to double the lead after VAR confirmed no offside.
Curtis Jones then ended Wolves' hopes with a precise low shot from the edge of the box, before Hee Chan Hwang scored a consolation goal for the home team during added time. Nevertheless, Slot wasn't entirely satisfied as Liverpool conceded.
“Almost everything was the same as three days ago, except we scored more goals. It's frustrating that we hardly gave the opponents any chances, yet still conceded,” Liverpool's manager added.
The 45-year-old coach also admitted his emotions changed rapidly within just a few days. “Every three days I feel differently. Three days ago my feeling was completely different compared to now. It's good to reach the FA Cup quarter-finals. In three or four days we'll have another big match in Istanbul.”
The convincing win over Wolves not only helped Liverpool advance to the FA Cup quarter-finals but also somewhat relieved pressure on manager Arne Slot, while building positive momentum ahead of the upcoming packed schedule.
