FIFA makes a crucial decision regarding seven naturalized Malaysian players

The final ruling from the Court of Arbitration for Sport has compelled the seven naturalized players of the Malaysian national team to continue serving the disciplinary sanctions previously imposed by FIFA.

After the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) determined that the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) engaged in fraudulent conduct in the naturalization case of seven players, the prior disciplinary sanctions issued by FIFA will remain unchanged, meaning there will be no leniency regarding this violation.

Accordingly, the seven players—Gabriel Felipe Arrocha, Facundo Tomas Garces, Rodrigo Julian Holgado, Imanol Javier Machuca, Joao Vitor Brandao Figueiredo, Jon Irazabal Iraurgui, and Hector Alejandro Hevel Serrano—are all required to pay financial fines. Simultaneously, they will also continue to serve a ban from all football-related activities for a period of 12 months, effective from October 6, the date when the disciplinary decision officially took effect.

At the end of January, CAS had previously paved the way for the aforementioned seven players to be allowed to resume playing, this decision also received approval from FIFA. However, with the latest conclusion, they are currently only permitted to train with their teammates at their respective clubs and must wait at least seven more months before they can officially return to competitive matches.

Not only weakening the national team's strength, this sanction also severely impacts Johor Darul Ta’zim, Malaysia's top football club. The absence of the trio Joao Figueiredo, Jon Irazabal, and Hector Hevel significantly reduces the squad's depth across multiple competitions and puts Johor Darul Ta’zim at risk of having match results reviewed in games where these players participated.

At the national team level, the unfavorable ruling from CAS could lead the "Malayan Tigers" to face severe disciplinary action from the Asian Football Confederation (AFC). The worst scenario is that the Malaysian national team could be handed a 0-3 defeat in two matches during the Asian Cup 2027 qualifying round due to the use of improperly naturalized players, including matches against Nepal and Vietnam.

Beyond merely adjusting match scores, AFC still has several other disciplinary measures within its framework. The organization may consider annulling all results achieved by the Malaysian national team in the current campaign, even disqualifying them from the Asian Cup 2027 qualifiers. Additionally, FAM also faces the possibility of incurring substantial financial penalties.

In the near future, AFC is expected to soon issue a final decision regarding disciplinary sanctions for the Malaysian national team and FAM, before they face the Vietnamese national team in the final Group F match of the Asian Cup 2027 qualifiers, scheduled to take place at the end of March.
