As Barcelona's presidential election enters its final stage, Lionel Messi's influence becomes the focal point amid internal disputes.
The presidential election of FC Barcelona is entering its decisive phase, and Lionel Messi unexpectedly becomes the center of attention despite not directly participating. According to Cronica Global, even a small gesture from the Argentine icon could significantly impact the voting members' psychology.
Currently, incumbent president Joan Laporta is still considered the most promising candidate before the election day. However, his rival Victor Font is reportedly hoping Messi will express support, thereby creating a turning point in the power race at Nou Camp.
The sensitivity of the story stems from Messi's controversial departure from Barcelona in 2021. Some sources claim the Argentine superstar still harbors dissatisfaction with Laporta, meaning any signal from him could alter the election landscape. Analysts even liken Messi's potential involvement to a "nuclear button" that could overturn the results.
Nevertheless, up to now, Messi has not shown any intention to intervene in Barcelona's internal politics. However, controversies surrounding his near return to the club in 2023 are heating up the topic. Notably, former coach Xavi Hernandez recently made attention-grabbing statements about this failed deal.
In an interview with La Vanguardia, Xavi confirmed Messi was very close to returning to Nou Camp after winning the 2022 World Cup with Argentina. According to him, Barcelona even received La Liga's approval on financial matters, but the deal ultimately didn't happen due to political considerations within the club.
In response to this accusation, Laporta strongly rebutted during the pre-election debate. He asserted Barcelona's leadership indeed sent a contract proposal to Messi's family but did not receive final approval. “We sent the contract to Jorge Messi. By May, he told me the deal couldn't happen because Leo would face too much pressure if he returned to Barcelona and wanted to go to Miami. I respect that decision,” Laporta stated.
Not stopping there, Laporta candidly criticized Xavi's final period as head coach. According to him, the legendary former midfielder faced many difficulties balancing family life and work, and frequently expressed dissatisfaction with the squad he was managing.
With the election just days away, every development related to Messi is closely monitored. Although the Argentine superstar himself remains silent, many believe even a small signal from him could strongly impact the power dynamics at Barcelona.
