Coach Jose Mourinho will serve a two-match suspension after receiving a red card in the draw between Benfica and Porto.
The disciplinary committee of the Portuguese Football Federation issued two separate decisions, meaning that Coach Jose Mourinho will be banned from coaching in Benfica's next two matches.
The 63-year-old manager received a one-match suspension for the red card in the final minutes of the 2-2 draw between Benfica and Porto, a match considered the "Super Classic" in Portugal. He was dismissed after leaving the technical area and kicking the ball towards Porto's bench to celebrate a goal. Mourinho stated he actually intended to kick the ball into the stands.
Known for controversies throughout his career, Mourinho also received an additional 11-day suspension due to a verbal exchange with Porto assistant coach Lucho Gonzalez.
The one-match penalty will apply to Benfica's upcoming match against Arouca this weekend. Meanwhile, the 11-day suspension prevents Mourinho from participating in the match against Vitoria next week. Portuguese media reports that these two penalties are not concurrent and must be served separately.
Benfica announced they will appeal the disciplinary decisions issued on Thursday evening, stating that the penalty for Mourinho is "unfair and lacks basis."
According to the disciplinary committee, Mourinho initiated the tension with Gonzalez by making a gesture with his index finger and thumb, and repeatedly saying "you are so small". In response, Gonzalez called Mourinho, who once led Porto to win the Champions League in 2004, a "traitor".
On his part, Lucho Gonzalez also received a one-match suspension and an eight-day activity ban.
Speaking immediately after the match, Mourinho expressed his desire to clarify the situation after reports claimed he called his opponent "small." He stated: "I want to say that the person on Porto's bench, who was also dismissed, called me a traitor about 50 times in the tunnel. I want him to explain clearly: a traitor to what?
I worked at Porto, I gave everything to Porto. Then I went to Chelsea, Inter, Real Madrid, Fenerbahce and continued to give my utmost. I have dedicated everything to football, to this job every day. That is professionalism. Being insulted by fans is different, it's part of football..."
Mourinho also criticized the referees, who issued the 15th red card in his coaching career.
The "Special One" added: "Regarding the red card, there are two things I want to say. The referee said I was dismissed for kicking the ball towards Porto's bench, but that is completely untrue.
I don't remember exactly if it was three, four, or five times, but I have done the same thing many times before at the Luz stadium. After the team scores, I kick the ball into the stands. It's just a way to celebrate and give the ball to a lucky fan. I know my technique isn't great, but my intention was to kick the ball into the stands."
