Identify the first Asian team to qualify for the 2027 World Cup

The Australian women's team becomes the first to secure a spot in the semifinals of the AFC Women's Asian Cup 2026.

On March 13, the Australian women's team entered their first quarterfinal match against North Korea. Ultimately, the host team narrowly won 2-1, thereby securing a ticket to the semifinals. Notably, this result also officially earned them qualification for the FIFA Women's World Cup 2027.

The match began with high pressing from both sides. North Korea created the first dangerous opportunity when Ri Hye Gyong headed wide off the post in the 5th minute following Kyong Yong's pass. However, Australia unexpectedly took the lead in the 9th minute. Capitalizing on a defensive mistake by the opponent, Sam Kerr stole the ball and set up Alanna Kennedy to score the opening goal.

After conceding, North Korea increased pressure and created several dangerous chances. Australian goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold made consecutive saves against shots from Kyong Yong and Chae Un Yong. The East Asian team even nearly equalized late in the first half when Hong Song Ok's shot hit the post.

Early in the second half, Australia doubled their lead. In the 47th minute, after Katrina Gorry's pressing caused a defensive error by North Korea, Sam Kerr surged forward and decisively finished with her left foot, raising the score to 2-0.

Undeterred, North Korea continued to push their attacking formation and were rewarded in the 65th minute. From a combination play inside the box, Kyong Yong assisted Chae Un Yong to score, reducing the deficit to 1-2.

The final minutes were tense as North Korea continuously pressured in search of an equalizer. However, Mackenzie Arnold's solid goalkeeping helped Australia preserve the victory.

With this result, Australia advances to the semifinals and will face the winner of the match between the Chinese women's team and Chinese Taipei, while North Korea will enter the playoff for a qualification spot World Cup.
