OFFICIAL: FIFA confirms England national team captain changes nationality

Midfielder Harvey Vale has been confirmed by FIFA to have relinquished his English nationality to switch to playing for the Ireland national team.

Only about ten days remain until the World Cup play-off between Ireland and the Czech Republic in Prague takes place, and a very noteworthy development has emerged regarding the squad list that coach Heimir Hallgrímsson may select.

FIFA recently confirmed that midfielder Harvey Vale of QPR has completed the procedures to switch his international playing nationality from England to Ireland.

This information was confirmed through an update on FIFA's Change of Association platform.

Vale is an attacking midfielder who can play on both the left and right wings. This season, he has appeared in 22 matches for QPR, the club where he is a teammate of Irish national team player Jimmy Dunne, and has scored 2 goals.

This attacking midfielder developed from Chelsea's academy and once made an appearance for the first team in 2022 in the League Cup. Previously, Vale had a very prominent career playing at youth levels for the England national team, having represented the U15, U16, U17, U19, and U20 teams.

He was also the captain of the England national team in the 2022 U19 European Championship final, where they defeated Israel 3-1. The squad at that time also included notable names such as Liam Delap and Jarrell Quansah.

However, due to injury, Vale's career has somewhat stalled compared to the great potential he once showed while playing at youth levels. He had loan spells at Hull City and Bristol Rovers before joining QPR in a permanent transfer this season, after nearly moving to play in the Saudi League.

While managing Bristol Rovers, coach Joey Barton once praised Vale extensively. Although deployed in the left-back position, he performed very well.

Barton once commented: “In the two matches he started in that position, he looked like a young Ashley Cole, as if he had played there for a long time.”

He also highly valued Vale's playing ability: “He is a player with very good tactical thinking, diverse passing ability, good movement, and also quite solid in aerial situations.”

Additionally, Barton was particularly impressed with Vale's attitude: “What pleased me most was his attitude. Many young players coming from Premier League clubs often think they are automatically entitled to start and that everything will be very easy.”

In the context where the Ireland national team is facing several injury cases and some players are not in good form ahead of the match against the Czech Republic, Vale is likely to be considered by coach Heimir Hallgrímsson for a call-up to the squad list, which will be announced mid-next week.
