HOT: Spanish National Team Considering Dropping Finalissima 2026

The Spanish National Team is reportedly considering backup plans in case the Finalissima 2026 match against the Argentine National Team has to be postponed, as the venue for the tournament remains unresolved.

The Finalissima 2026 match is currently scheduled for March 27th, but notably, the venue has not been officially confirmed. While Spain proposed the Santiago Bernabeu stadium as the host location, Argentina disagreed with the option of playing in Madrid. Faced with this stalemate, the European champion is preparing a backup plan in case this crucial match has to be postponed.

According to the newspaper Marca, the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) is planning to organize a friendly match with the Serbian National Team at home if the issues related to the Finalissima are not resolved soon.

Serbia became a suitable alternative because their schedule was disrupted after the Qatar Football Festival 2026 in Doha was canceled. The Serbian National Team was initially scheduled to face Qatar on March 26th and Saudi Arabia four days later.

Marca also reported that the match between the Spanish National Team and the Serbian National Team could still take place even if the Finalissima is held as planned, because the friendly match the reigning European champion was scheduled to play against Egypt on March 30th has been canceled.

On the other hand, after news emerged that Argentina rejected the proposal to host the match at the Bernabeu Stadium, President of the Argentine Football Association (AFA) Claudio Tapia stated that Buenos Aires is fully ready to host this eagerly awaited match.

According to Argentine journalist Gaston Edul, the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) is expected to soon issue an official statement to clarify its position. He also revealed that the AFA is preparing a new proposal to send to Spain aimed at moving the match venue to a neutral stadium in Europe.

Under this proposal, Lisbon, Rome, and London are emerging as the top three candidates to host the match scheduled for March 27th, as these cities all have stadiums ready to serve. However, the situation remains quite complex. Gaston Edul warned that if UEFA does not accept the AFA's proposal to play at a neutral venue, the Finalissima risks being postponed indefinitely.
