Despite a 0-7 defeat, a Southeast Asian team still has a chance to reach the World Cup

Despite a heavy loss to Japan in the quarter-finals of the 2026 Women's Asian Cup, the Philippines women's team still has a significant opportunity to secure a World Cup berth through a playoff match.

The Philippines women's team suffered a heavy 0-7 defeat against Japan in the quarter-finals of the 2026 Women's Asian Cup on March 15 afternoon. Against a superior opponent, the Southeast Asian representative was almost unable to deploy their usual tactics and spent most of the time defending against relentless attacks from the team from the Land of the Rising Sun.

From the early minutes, the Japan women's team exerted strong pressure on the Philippines goal. However, 21-year-old goalkeeper Nina Meollo had an outstanding first half, repeatedly blocking dangerous situations. Nevertheless, the resilience of Philippines lasted only until the end of the first half.

After several missed opportunities, Japan finally broke the deadlock in the 45th minute. From a chaotic situation in the penalty area, forward Mina Tanaka rose high to head the ball close to the goal, opening the scoring for the blue-shirted team. This goal partly reflected the continuous pressure Japan created throughout the first half.

Not stopping there, just before the first half ended, Japan doubled their lead. From a corner kick executed by Honoka Hayashi, defender Toko Koga moved intelligently before rising high to head accurately, helping coach Nils Nielsen's team enter the break with a 2-0 advantage.

Moving into the second half, Japan's dominant game continued. In the 63rd minute, substitute player Remina Chiba scored to increase the lead to 3-0 with a neat finish following Fujino's precise pass. This goal opened a period of explosion as the East Asian team successively found the opponent's net.

In the remainder of the match, the Japan women's team added four more goals to seal a decisive 7-0 victory and advance to the semi-finals, where they will face their frequent rival, the South Korea women's team.

For Philippines, the heavy defeat does not mean they have lost their chance to participate in the world's biggest football event. The Southeast Asian team still has an important playoff match against Uzbekistan on March 19 to compete for a World Cup ticket. Against an opponent considered evenly matched, Philippines is still seen as having a significant opportunity to secure a spot at the World Cup for the second consecutive time.

If they achieve that, they will also become the sole Southeast Asian representative at the tournament. Even if they lose, the Philippines women's team still has a chance to compete for a World Cup ticket through the Intercontinental playoff.
