Before the Champions League quarter-final return match, Bayern Munich unexpectedly faced a rare situation where all four goalkeepers from the first team were injured.
The personnel crisis at the goalpost forced the coaching staff of the Bavarian club to consider unprecedented options for hosting Atalanta at the Allianz Arena.
The situation worsened after Bayern's 1-1 draw against Bayer Leverkusen in Bundesliga round 26 on March 14. In that match, third goalkeeper Sven Ulreich played the full 90 minutes but was later confirmed to have suffered a right thigh adductor muscle injury.
Medical examination results revealed that the 37-year-old goalkeeper suffered a muscle tear and is forced to take a long break from playing. According to Bayern's medical team announcement, Ulreich may be sidelined for about six weeks, meaning the "Gray Tigers" have lost their last experienced option in goal.

Before Ulreich encountered issues, the other three Bayern goalkeepers had also joined the injury list. Captain Manuel Neuer, the club's primary goalkeeper, is still recovering from a calf injury and definitely cannot return before the German national team training camp at the end of this month. Meanwhile, backup goalkeeper Jonas Urbig has not fully recovered from a concussion, and fourth goalkeeper Leon Klanac had already been sidelined due to a thigh muscle injury.
The simultaneous absence of all four first-team goalkeepers left coach Vincent Kompany in an extremely difficult situation before the Champions League return match on March 18 evening. With no familiar options left, the Belgian coach likely has to rely on young goalkeepers from the club's academy.
One of the most notable names is Leonard Prescott, a goalkeeper only 16 years old. Prescott was born in New York but plays for German youth teams and is considered one of Bayern's promising talents. This teenage goalkeeper was recently added to the match roster and sat as a substitute in the Leverkusen match.
If given the chance to play against Atalanta, Prescott would set a record as the youngest goalkeeper ever to play for Bayern, and the second youngest player in club history to appear for the first team, only after Paul Wanner, who debuted at age 16 and 15 days in January 2022.
Although lacking first-team experience, Prescott has accumulated some youth-level experience, having played in UEFA Youth League and German Youth Cup. Besides Prescott, Coach Kompany also has another option: Jannis Bartl, a 19-year-old goalkeeper currently starting for Bayern's reserve team in Germany's fourth division. Bartl was registered as a substitute in the win against Borussia Dortmund last month, indicating he is also under the coaching staff's consideration.
Meanwhile, Jonas Urbig still has a chance to return for the Atalanta match. Bayern's medical team will continue conducting concussion-related medical tests before making a final decision on whether this goalkeeper meets playing conditions.
Nevertheless, the current situation somewhat reduces pressure for Coach Kompany. In the away match in Italy, Bayern shocked by defeating Atalanta 6-1. The five-goal lead advantage allows the Bundesliga representative to fully control the situation before the return match. This safe margin also opens the possibility for the German club to confidently grant a debut opportunity to a young goalkeeper at Allianz Arena without facing excessive result-related risks.
