Wan Kuzain, the American-born Malaysian star, has made a new career advancement in the United States.
Recently, Wan Kuzain, the American-born Malaysian star, joined Sporting JAX after concluding his stint with St Louis City 2.
As a versatile central midfielder, Kuzain quickly made an impact by playing in his first two matches for the club in the USL Championship. The 1998-born star was fielded as a starter and formed a solid midfield combination before being substituted in the 59th minute during the match against Rhode Island FC.
Kuzain previously impressed while playing for St Louis City 2 in the 2025 season, becoming a key pillar for the team. Last season, he appeared in 25 matches, scoring one goal and providing two assists.
Prior to this, Kuzain had been called up three times to the Malaysian national team's training camp, but all three times he remained on the reserve list. However, in the context of having just lost seven talented naturalized players, the prospect of Kuzain making his debut for the Malaysian national team is entirely possible. This depends on coach Peter Cklamovski, who is currently striving with "Malaysian Tigers" to finish the Asian Cup 2027 qualifying round with a perfect record of six wins.
Nevertheless, the Malaysian national team faces a significant risk of being handed a 0-3 forfeit loss in two matches of the Asian Cup 2027 qualifiers. The reason stems from the team allegedly using seven ineligible naturalized players in matches against Nepal and Vietnam.
Previously, the Court of Arbitration for Sport determined that the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) had errors in completing the naturalization procedures for certain players. According to the ruling, the involved players were banned from playing for 12 months, and the association faced additional financial penalties. The case file was subsequently forwarded to the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) for further review and disciplinary action against the Malaysian national team.
According to the latest information, an AFC representative stated that the organization is finalizing the last steps before announcing the official decision. FAM is likely required to pay a minimum fine of 1,000 USD, while also being handed a 0-3 forfeit loss for national team matches involving the improperly naturalized players.
If this scenario becomes reality, the group standings could change significantly. The Malaysian national team would lose its advantage, while Vietnam, currently trailing by three points, would have an opportunity to rise and gain control in the race for a spot in the 2027 Asian Cup finals.
AFC is expected to announce the penalty soon in the coming period. It is highly probable that this decision will be made before coach Peter Cklamovski and his team travel to Vietnam to prepare for the final qualifying match.
