Recently, the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) confirmed receiving a decision from the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) regarding the use of an ineligible player in the 2027 AFC Asian Cup qualifiers.
According to the announcement, in a meeting on March 17, 2026 chaired by AFC Disciplinary & Ethics Committee Chairman Jahangir Baglari, the committee concluded FAM violated Article 56 of the Disciplinary & Ethics Code by registering and using an invalid player in two matches of the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers.

Malaysia forfeited 0-3 in two matches
The two matches identified as violations include Malaysia vs Nepal on March 25, 2025 at Sultan Ibrahim Stadium (Johor), where the host team won 2-0, and Malaysia vs Vietnam on June 10, 2025 at Bukit Jalil Stadium, which ended with a 4-0 victory for the "Malayan Tigers".
However, after reviewing the case, the AFC Disciplinary & Ethics Committee decided to declare Malaysia forfeited 0-3 in both matches according to Article 25.1 of the AFC Disciplinary & Ethics Code. This means the original results of the aforementioned matches were canceled and replaced with forfeiture scores for the Malaysian team.
Not only did the match results change, FAM also had to pay a fine of 50,000 USD (approximately 196,119 RM). This is considered a significant penalty, as it directly affects the standings in the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers.
With the latest results, Vietnam has secured a spot in the 2027 Asian Cup finals one round early as the top team in Group F.
